October Meetup- The Luminaries - Eleanor Catton

Apologies for the late change! Due to a number of factors we will not be able to meet on the 3rd as planned. I apologise for any inconvenience caused and hope to see you all next week!

By ballot we will be trying a new location, and reading The Luminaries.

Amazon says: It is 1866, and Walter Moody has come to make his fortune upon the New Zealand goldfields. On arrival, he stumbles across a tense gathering of twelve local men, who have met in secret to discuss a series of unsolved crimes. A wealthy man has vanished, a whore has tried to end her life, and an enormous fortune has been discovered in the home of a luckless drunk. Moody is soon drawn into the mystery: a network of fates and fortunes that is as complex and exquisitely patterned as the night sky. The Luminaries is an extraordinary piece of fiction. It is full of narrative, linguistic and psychological pleasures, and has a fiendishly clever and original structuring device. Written in pitch-perfect historical register, richly evoking a mid-19th century world of shipping and banking and goldrush boom and bust, it is also a ghost story, and a gripping mystery. It is a thrilling achievement for someone still in her mid-20s, and will confirm for critics and readers that Catton is one of the brightest stars in the international writing firmament.

Look forward to seeing everyone and hearing what you think!

Hey all! Just wanted to say we're at a table in the dining area. If you're having trouble finding us just ask the bar staff and they will point you in the right direction!

I'm really enjoying the book though I haven't had time to read more than a third or so... too busy at work and renovating the flat!
I'll be away next week, getting back on Thursday evening so might not be able to make the meetup.

The book up for disucssion this month will be the Luminaries. However, you will have some more time to read it as we are going to have to push the date of our meetup back a week. Hope to see you all next thursday the 10th.

The meetup is in a couple of days and I wanted to clarify something (first time joining a book club)... Is The Luminaries a book you've all already read and will be discussing, or is this the book to read this month and discuss at the next meetup in November?

I never thought of this, but I hope it's the latter, as I'm still only on page 400 and won't won't come if I find out the ending prematurely! I'm loving this book so far..

I'm sensing a slightly different bent to reading and learning that one I'm use to, so all the best and goodbye

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
