Introductory Meetup

  • Dec 19, 2012 · 8:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Come to the inaugural meeting of our group!  This is our chance to introduce ourselves and to begin plunging into the fascinating intersection of technology and religion.

I'll have a short reading xeroxed for everyone that we can read together and discuss.  I'm also looking for feedback about ways we should conduct this meet-up moving forward.

I guess I'm technically the "organizer", but I want this group to belong to everyone.

Looking forward to meet you all,

Dan

Great initial conversation. Lots of ideas for future subjects. Looking forward to the next one.

I am stuck on the east side until at least 7:30-8. :( I am crestfallen, I've been looking forward to this for weeks. Please keep me in the loop for the next meeting.

Hey all! In response to Henry and Mike's point about making reading available ahead of time, I've posted the reading for the first meeting in the "pages" section on a page called "readings". It should be a link to an article in the New York Times that touches on a lot of the pertinent ideas for this Meetup. Let me know if you guys have trouble finding/accessing it. Looking forward to meeting everyone!

Love the irony of this article considering how we are meeting online. Beautiful illustration too. I'm oddly looking forward to this group. Thanks for posting this reading.

"Are We Becoming Cyborgs?" from the NY Times is indeed an excellent starting point for your group, Daniel. The group should be great fun, and I look forward to bringing my perspective to whatever discussions might occur. As with any other area of endeavor, it is collective decisions made manifest from individual actions which carry a future or deny it.

Several things come to mind about cybernetic organisms. A remarkable researcher friend, Stephan A. Schwartz, I've known since 1980 now makes periodic comments about "Homo superiorus" in his daily news service. It was him who got me interested in Lifeboat Foundation's initiatives. That I'm on three of their advisory boards. With my avocation of the study of consciousness I can easily make a great case that technology derives its meaning from how its used.

Wednesdays don't work for me but you can never pick a night that works for everyone. Sounds like fun; have a great time!

Are coffee houses your preferred imperative? If you want any more people to participate in your group, shouldn't an "Introductory" meeting accommodate all, or have you prepared for enough "Introductory" meetings to cover us all?

That said, it's obviously very important to me that everyone who wants to be a part of this meetup has the opportunity to do so. What I'm thinking is we'll try to have as many different smaller meetups up as possible (probably in different locations) so that everyone can be a part. And then maybe a few times a year have "Super Meetups" where more people can get together. And if anyone has good ideas about how to keep meet-ups small while also involving as many people as possible please let me know!

The concept of "Introductory", especially at the beginning of any organization, is a broad umbrella conceptually, while the organic processes of smaller groups is "operative" as method and formula.

Perhaps you would like to post your "reading" in advance on here in the "More" - "Files" section?

Great point Henry! I'm currently still trying to figure out what reading to bring in for the first meeting. Hoping to do that this weekend and once I do so I'll post it if possible

$5 not a problem for me, I always like to chat and eat. Looking forward to seeing you all. Great concept.

IMPORTANT: I just confirmed our meeting with Pier Coffee and they said that to reserve their upstairs, is a 5 dollar food and drink minimum per person. They have lots of coffee and food options, so hopefully this won't be a problem for anyone, but if it is, please let me know ahead of time so we can figure something out.

Morgan, excited to meet you (and everyone else) too. Also, just wanted to say how thrilled I am to have had such a strong reaction already and have so many people join. One of the things I look forward to discussing at the first meet-up is the way we can have more meet-ups that happen at different times, so more people can attend.

Thanks, Daniel. I'd anticipate you've got a great groove in the making here. Having successfully run groups, I found that one of the things which helped attendance and also brought in new faces was to rotate the meeting locations to fun places in the Valley or Malibu.

Hey Mike, not sure exactly what you mean by "open source", (I'm still pretty new to the whole Meet-Up environment. But yes, while I do have some strong ideas about what I want this meet-up to be about, I'm also very open to hearing other people's thoughts and will always welcome input.

Then, Dan, it seems like you envision this as an open source group?
