Thanks for helping me pick the date and time. (doodle link)

Let's play some Casual Magic! If you've never played, I'll have people lined up to teach you. I'll bring some newbie friendly decks that you can borrow. Experienced players please bring some newbie-friendly decks if you have any to lend.

What is "Magic:The Gathering"? (click)

How do you play? (click)

"WTF are you talking about?"

If you've never played Magic:tG before, it's easy to learn (basics); we'll teach you.

BYOB. Depending on how long everyone wants to stay, we can order some food.

My complex has very limited parking so I suggest carpooling. There's street parking outside the complex or try across Bascom at Farnham Elementary School.

Please don't flake at the last minute, others that may want to attend and can't because you wasted a spot will get you auto-dropped from events I host in the future.

I woke up this morning with the sudden realization that in the Commander game that we eventually conceded to Kendrick, even if he had plenty of untapped Islands, his Forbid could only target one spell at a time. So when he used it to counter one spell, and so his Forbid was on the stack and *not* in his hand, I could have safely *responded* with my Allay spell.

If there's interest in a draft bag, I'm totally willing to put it together - but it costs me money to do so, I can do it for as little as $10 a person, but I need to know ahead of time, basically, the more money people throw in and people playing, the more interesting it gets. Just in case.

As someone who's on a tight budget, I'd prefer to use my existing cards rather than buying new ones. (Also, I'm pretty sure that I suck at knowing which cards are worth more than others, even among the older cards that I'm more familiar with.)

Hi Pamela -- I'll be bringing a decent sized box of extra commons that anyone who's relatively new or has a small collection can help themselves to.

Pete, if you're up for it, maybe we can draft from 6-9?

If anyone wants to draft, I have a totally amazing selection of sealed Magic from Visions to Gatecrash. I could bring a Chaos Draft bag for drafting as well.

      June 20, 2013

    • Pete

It takes very little arm twisting to get me to draft. Chaos Draft bag would be fun!

Probably not good if there will be beginners attending, or even experienced players who won't want to construct a special deck in advance; but... I used to be in a group that had regular tournaments in which the decks were constrained by some theme. Sometimes as simple as "only cards from Ice Age are legal", sometimes more complex.

One interesting example is "Rainbow Staircase", in which you have a 56-card deck with 20 lands, exactly 2 of each of the 10 dual lands; and 36 non-lands, which must include exactly one of each (color, casting cost) pair in {R, G, W, U, B, A} x {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6}. (Only playable if you have a big card stockpile; I'm pretty sure I don't have all 36 instances.)

Here are two complementary "theme" tournament ideas that I came up with but never tried. "Alphabet Soup": 40-card deck, all cards other than basic lands must have different first letters. "Common Initial": 60-card deck (or 40), all cards other than basic lands must have the same first letter.

    • Pete

Yeah, I've heard of those formats. I haven't been playing long enough to have any dual lands save the occasional RTR/GTC shockland.

I guess my attendance is conditional on either getting a ride (see my profile for details), or my feeling OK with a one-hour bike ride home in what might be darkness. Feel free to count my vote as fractional.
