1st Annual Charity BBQ: RECESS!!!

Come celebrate the end of summer with a geektastic BBQ. We are going to changes things up a little this time. Instead of everyone bringing food, we are all going to bring toys instead, which will be donated to a local children's hospital.

A core group of super volunteers are going to provide enough burgers, dogs, corn, baked beans and other goodies to feed the hungriest geek in the south bay.

We will be playing a variety of games in an attempt to relive our misspent youths. Games will include: freeze tag, water balloon relays, pin the tail on the donkey, trivia, and a crafts table. Plus Emma Prusch has a free animal farm open to curious explorers.

We are suggesting a minimum donation of $10 in toys. The children's hospital we are donating to has some old playstation 2s for the kids to use. Any playstation 2 game donated will meet the minimum donation. We would be more than happy to help you clean your closet of any dust-gathered playstation 2 games. Donating any PG-13 or less movies will also fulfill the minimum donation.

All other toys have to be new because of national hospital safety standards. A full list of needed donations can be found HERE. Some possible suggestions include: Lego sets, superhero action figures, itunes gift cards, puzzles, jewelry making kits, and playdoh sets.

We are going to have a lot of fun! And more importantly we are going to make life a little more fun for all the children that are stuck in the hospital for months on end.

We are asking that you finalize your RSVPs by 11pm on Friday the 6th. If you have to change your RSVP after this time (i.e. drop out) we would appreciate you still contributing a toy donation as we will have spent our own money buying you food. We are super busy planning activities and will post some of the games and contests for you soon. It's going to be so much fun!!!

For all of those last minute shoppers out there: For gift cards, Walgreens is located right by the park at 1760 Story Road, San Jose, CA 95122. It looks like the closest Toys R Us is 10 min away at 2179 Monterey Hwy, San Jose, CA 95125.

We have a final list of activities that we will be running and teaching during the BBQ.

Competitions include: Freeze Tag, Water Balloon relay, Pin the Nose on Elmo, Star Wars vs Star Trek madlib off, and Trivia.

Crafts include: friendship bracelets, origami, how to build your own tardis and dalek out of paper, super hero crayon coloring pages, and face painting.

We reserve the right to throw some more activities in that sound fun to us :)

Is anybody besides me having difficulty seeing these pictures? I can see the top row, they look great! -- and then flickr freezes.

I wanted to thank everyone again for coming out and supporting all of the little kids at Oakland Children's. I can't wait to do it again next year!

I wanted to give an extra thanks to Nisha, Sarah, Renee, Julian and Arvian for helping organize, prep and fund the event. This was most definitely a team effort!

Becky, Julian, and all those who helped organize the charity event - THANK YOU! Dan and I had a great time. We're happy to know that our donations are going to a good cause. Anything for the children! <3

The address SAYS SOUTH king but the map indicates NORTH king. My GPS doesn't show a listing for a south king

Am i safe assuming someone just goobered when they were writing the address down?

    September 8, 2013

    • Thomas

      Ooh TomTom that explains it..LOL

      September 8, 2013

    • Sharon T

Apple maps had the same problem. Apparently to Apple, "South King" is not the same as "S King" :( luckily once at the wrong loc- just looked up the park rather than address and found it fine.

Great for a first time event (first meet up for me and first time it was run). Great people and it was pretty well organized. If Becky could have controlled the weather it would have been perfect. A lot of time time went into making this event and it showed.

Out of curiosity, what about a donation of an Xbox original game or a Wii U game? I have one if each I don't mind parting with.

We won't have anything to play it on. Sorry Bruno.

Makes sense, this is why I ask! Lol I'll make a stop by the toy store really quick. I'm gonna be a little late, not terribly late, maybe around noonish?

I might be missing the information in an obvious place, but do you want the toys wrapped or should I just bring them as is?

    September 6, 2013

    • Becky

As is. They sort them and give them to the patients based on interest in the type of toy and the occasion. Sometimes they are birthday gifts. Sometimes they get them if they had to do something really hard. And sometimes they get them for special occasions, like finishing chemotherapy for good, or getting their bone marrow transplant.

      September 6, 2013

  • Renee

Will the BBQ include vegetarian options or should I bring my own veggie-friendly food to grill?

    September 6, 2013

    • Becky

We are planning on getting some veggie burgers for the vegetarians.

      September 6, 2013

    • Sharon T

Good to know- I was wondering the same thing myself :)

      September 6, 2013

  • Larry L

I assume that those among us that left all our toys back east when we moved out here could bring a donation via check? Or should I stop at a toy store between now and then?

    September 6, 2013

    • Becky

Toys have to be new (unless they are video games). So you can buy a toy or you can buy a gift card. It's up to you! There is a walgreens and a target right by the park so you can do it on your way if you want.

      September 6, 2013

  • Mr. $.

I have dvd's, a few blu rays, and even vhs. Are all accepted or should I just bring specific formats of movies?

What if some of us do not have older Playstation 2 ganes????

    September 4, 2013

  • Becky

I spoke with the child life specialists today about your offer for donating your old gaming systems. They would love your old playstation 2s and any controllers or accessories that go along with them. We can not take any other gaming system unfortunately. However, if you want to donate any Xbox 360 games you don't want anymore, we can take those (because we have one in the playroom, and one in the teen lounge that the kids can use). Does that clear up everyone's questions? I'm getting super psyched about this weekend!

    September 4, 2013

  • Irene D.

Is this a kid friendly event?

    September 3, 2013

    • Becky

Well it's alcohol free (the whole park is). And yes, kids are welcome. I'm just not sure how many other kids will be there for them to play with (other than all the young at heart kids in the geek club). But

      September 3, 2013

    • Becky

I think if other people are interested in having kids come they should reply to this post, so you have a better idea of whether or not they will have any company.

      September 3, 2013

  • Mark

I'm just saying... According to the AP Stylebook: An event cannot be described as annual until it has been held in at least two successive years. Do not use the term first annual. Instead, note that sponsors plan to hold an event annuall I'm just saying.... Let the flame war begin :-D

    September 1, 2013

    • Becky

It just means I'm planning on doing it again next year. Also, I'm not a journalist. So I don't need to worry about the AP stylebook (i.e. who cares?).

There is this amazing organization called BayKids, which goes into area Children's Hospitals and lets kids create video projects to express themselves as they cope with chronic diseases. Here are some videos, if you are interested in seeing what it can be like for kids in the hospital. These are just cute:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3iyIxlTq-Y
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-f-30igjlYo

These might help you understand how long some of these kids are isolated in the hospital and how important the toys are to keeping them sane:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2YGPIVtxsw
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CbR946bvqfE&list=TL6ge4ys9q1Xc

And this is at the hospital we are donating to. They don't get as many toys as the other hospitals because they are serving underserved populations: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akCE2tUipd4&list=TL6ge4ys9q1Xc

  • Becky

There have been a lot of questions about donating old playstation 2s or other gaming systems. I'm looking into it, but I won't know for sure until Wednesday because of the holiday. I do believe we can take your playstation 2s. I know we can take your controllers. We do have one x box 360 so if you have any old xbox 360 games you want to get rid of, feel free to donate those as well.
I'll update this as soon as I know for sure. You guys are the best!

Haha, to be fair, Julian did originally post it as 11:30pm. Dane pointed it out and it got fixed :) But maybe we can plan a pumpkin ball at midnight some other time.

If you (or anyone else) wants to set up dodgeball as one of the activities, send me a pm, and we can chat about it. This goes for any ideas for games you might have actually!
