Ten years after their monumental collaboration on ROBOCOP (1987), director Paul Verhoeven and screenwriter Edward Neumeier team up a second time to create a modern blockbustin’ classic, a fable-like ultra-sophisticated satire of fascism in a pro-war future society.
STARSHIP TROOPERS has guns, big-ass bugs, and several megatons of outer space machismo, but to leave it at that would be to sell this film dangerously short (which we would not do). STARSHIP TROOPERS is by far one of the smartest, subtlest critiques of modern civilization out there today. As Verhoeven said of the film’s central message: “war makes fascists of us all.” Although the film initially appears to masquerade as a straight up, propaganda-lovin’ journey through the vastness space, in reality it is far much more.
