Geographic Society of Chicago: Summer 2014 Travelogue Series

Rio and Curitiba – On Beaches and Buses in Brazil

presented by

Euan Hague Professor, Department of Geography, DePaul University

In February 2013, Euan Hague stayed in Rio de Janiero and Curitiba, exploring the former as a tourist and the latter as an urban geographer.  Rio’s spectacular views and dramatic scenery make it one of the most amazing urban landscapes in the world. Curitiba is a world leader in sustainable urban development and environmental planning.  Since the mid-1970s, the city has operated a comprehensive public transit network of high speed buses, developed a recycling program, and devised a series of parks and gardens that both control flooding and provide amenities.  Join Euan as he examines these two Brazilian cities.
