The Cherry Blossom Festival at Descanso Gardens

It's time for for Cherry Blossom Festival! Descanso Gardens host activities surrounding the blooming of the lovely cherry blossom trees. This venue gets very busy for this festival, so I recommend that we meet early to photograph the grounds before they get busy with the performances and events for the day. Meet at the entrance. Here is the Descanso Gardens policy on Amateur Photography:

"Non-commercial Amateur Photography Informal, candid picture-taking and videotaping made for personal use, not for commercial purposes, are permitted throughout Descanso Gardens without fee or special permission. No flash photography or tripods are permitted in the buildings although tripods may be used in the Gardens. No photography of any kind is permitted in the Sturt Haaga Gallery. Additional photographic equipment is prohibited (lights, reflectors, props, costumes, models, etc.), except under commercial contract.

Amateur photographers may not use their representations of the Gardens for any public or commercial purpose unless approved by the Descanso Gardens Guild, Inc."

Algis, "public" means that you can't display your pictures in public like a gallery. But again, if there is nothing in your pictures depicting the Descanso Gardens you can display your pictures anywhere you want because they would not be able to prove it that you took them there.

      March 27, 2013

    • Eugene P.

Eric, I don't work for Descanso but I have been in photography many decades and have seen these kind of rules hundreds of times. This is basically the boilerplate rules. Every private place has them.

  • Eunice

Are we still posting 3 or 4 pictures per person? Just checking. :-)

    March 25, 2013

    • Karsten

Is a matter of fact, I am always amazed what other people perceive as good or interesting. We are all very different.

      March 25, 2013

    • Alfredo T.

I totally agree with Suzanne. Common sense and self criticism.

Thank you Suzanne for hosting. It was a beautiful and fun day to be in the garden.

You timed it well. We were done before the herd came in ;)

The line was incredibly LONG by the time I left. Great call!

I'll be posting three images (per our guidelines) tomorrow. In the meantime, I've posted pictures on my FB page. Check them out when you can. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10151513004727412.1073741826.785282411&type=1&l=93796737df

    • Noel R

Thanks Alfredo. Gr8 seeing you again. I'm rethinking posting here as quite a few have posted WAY more than the "best 3" image guidelines. I'm getting cross-eyed just looking at the same thing over and over again :P

      March 25, 2013

    • Alfredo T.

Hi Noel, I just think that is not a big deal if instead 3 you post 5 or even 10, as far your common sense is working. As far you posting something that ADDs to the whole.

What a beautiful day to see the gardens; the flowers, trees, and gardens were spectacular. Great seeing familiar faces as always.

The meetup was fun. I liked going through Descanso Gardens early and ahead of the crowd. The gentleman that was leading the tour was very knowledgeable. I like the way that he would stop to let the group take pictures before going on to the next point of interest. The only downside I encountered was one person that would be talking while the guide was trying to tell the group about a tree or flower.

Thank you Suzanne and Carl it was a great photo day.

Thanks for visiting Descanso Gardens today. I hope you all had a great time. The flowers will be beautiful on the promenade and the Cherry trees for the next week or so. Come on back, especially during the week when the crowds are down and your tripods can spread out easily. Funny thing was that the Karzan cherry in the Magnolia Garden that had no blossoms, actually had new blossoms just erupting just four hours later. Carl Spencer

Hi all, Clean those Lenses, Charge your Batteries and come on up to Descanso Gardens this Sunday. BE THERE AT 9:00 AM!! It will be a busy, busy day so we want to get in early.

The admission will be $6.00 as long as we go in together. Please meet me just to the left of the entrance/exit walk way. I will have a clipboard with Glendale Photo Group. I will be wearing a hat, shorts and will have a Descanso Logo shirt (blue) shirt of course along with my Tilly hat. After we are all there I will collect the money and we will walk over together to enter the Gardens.

The Cherry Blossoms are great this year.

If you have been here before you can just head out on your own after we enter, but if you stick around, I will give you a private tour of the Gardens showing you where all to Cherry Trees are located, as well as, some other areas that you will probably enjoy shooting. There are other activities going on that day for everyone. I will send this list out in another msg.

My daughter volunteers at 9:00 am at Keck Hospital of USC. We'll be coming through shortly afterwards. Should I look for you, Carl?

      March 21, 2013

    • Carl

I will be around all day. I am a Docent at Descanso and will be one of the team that are leading walking tours at 11:00 and 1:00 for everyone. If you take one of these tours you should see all the flowering trees and can decide what you want to shoot. If you are coming near mid day I suggest that you have some lunch before you arrive.

      March 21, 2013

  • Rene

Will be coming after my daughter's volunteering. How long will the group be there?

    March 21, 2013

    • Carl

Rene, there is no time limit. The initial walk around will take 45-60 minutes, but after that activities at the Gardens will be going on all day.

I have obtained a group rate admission of $6.00 per person. I will collect the fees from all that are there by 9:00 AM (please help by bringing the exact change). After we enter, I will privately give our group the same tour that I will be giving later in the day at scheduled tour times. So be there by 9:00 and save a couple of dollars and have a great fay at the Gardens.

This event was highlighted in the AAA Westways magazine and there has been a tremendous interest. Therefore, the Gardens management as requested that you do not bring tripods that day.

I volunteer at Descanso Gardens and am very familiar with what is in bloom at any time.

The Cherry Blossom Festival is usually wonderful. The Taiwan Cherry trees are already blooming (their time is Dec-Feb). We have about six different cherry tree varieties for you to see and photograph. Yes, everyone will have a camera and there will be lots of people so the earlier the better. If you are into Macro and photographing bees, the little critters will be all over the blossoms. The tulips should also be out by then as well. The Camellia's should still be in bloom, but towards the end of their blooming cycle.

If there are enough people responding, I will investigate a group discount.
