Round Table Image Critique

Round Table Image Critique

What about to have a Meetup where you can bring images that you would like to have them analyzed by other members? I'm sure that everyone will learn with this experience, from the commentaries on own images as well from commenting on other images. If there is interest I will set a date and a place. Suggestions? Please help to design this event.

I agree Alfredo. Really enjoyed it. It gave me incentive to apply what I learned and do better ;-))

My apology Chris. We'll definitely show up next time.

Thanks Alfredo for the thoughtful experience!

A great morning spent learning a lot. Let's have another one!

    May 11, 2013

  • Davidia

Very informative. I learned great tips about converting to black and white, and photo composition.

    May 11, 2013

  • Chris

Only 3 of us here. Where is everybody?

Alfredo, I'm afraid something has come up and I will not be able to make this meeting. I'm hoping your have a similar meeting in the future that I will be able to attend. Again, I'm sorry.

OK Algius, see you next time!

Parking info for those who never came to this location:
    - There are several parking structures in the area where you pay flat rate.
    - Right around the meeting building there is 2 hours metered parking.
    - A couple blocks away there are streets with free parking with no limits.
Good luck, see you all tomorrow, bring your images and let's learn and have fun!

This sounds great! I can't make that date, hope it happens again.

Thanks for your help Chris. I'm sure this Meetup will be great!

Yes I will bring a projector, however having done this kind of process before, prints can be actually better for presentation assuming there is a place to hang them up. If you choose to bring digital files please name your jpg files like this: "Chris Jackson 001.jpg", "Chris Jackson 002.jpg", etc...

    May 7, 2013

    • Chris

Also keep in mind you can get cheap prints made at Costo for example, while these wont be professional quality, they will be sufficient quality for the purposes of this workshop I think.

If we can get a projector and screen, that'd be best because we can all simultaneously view the image as it's being critiqued. With print, we either need to huddle or recall what we saw when listening to the critique...not good.

    May 7, 2013

    • Alfredo T.

I will provide a monitor to display the images, but in my opinion, images shown on screen are not an artistic expression or a finished product in photographic art. For those bringing files that's will be my first criticism. However it will be a great point to discuss. I would love to know the general opinion.

Good idea. I can't come this Saturday, so I hope you do it again

awww i so wish i can come but i have a mud run to go too... i hope you guys have another event like this.

I don't see that projected images are bad, I agree with your point about prints but realistically many of our members may not have access to a high quality printer, or paper.
    Just my 2 cents worth.

  • Myrna

Sounds like a great idea. Should we bring our camera card or memory stick to view on screen? Also, I'll be out of pocket the next 6 weekends, but am available on weeknights.

    • Algis P.

Prints are indeed the best way to see a picture but I rarely print any of my pics preferring to see them on a screen.

      May 2, 2013

    • Alfredo T.

Well Algis, that's a point we can discuss in the meeting, a print in my opinion delivers more information. When making a image for printing you have to take in consideration the texture, the thickness and even the color of the paper (white comes in different hues). Them you can see the skills of the photographer.

  • Myrna

Bummer. Can't make it on Saturdays for now. Enjoy!

By the way, here is a link to the Adobe Creative Suite Printing Guide. It's a bit technical, but we might be able to pick up some helpful printing tips prior to the Critique. It came from the Graphic.com digital newsletter I receive which also has a lot of useful info:

Hi Davidia, as mentioned the article is a "bit" technical, because is destined to another audience: the press industry, not for photographers though. Is directed for magazine printing and high quantities users.

      May 2, 2013

    • Davidia

Point well-taken. I just skimmed over the article and thought I saw some tips for printing via Photoshop that might be helpful.

      May 2, 2013

  • Chris

This sounds like a great idea, but we should limit the event to 12 people or less, and limit the number of images each person can bring I think.

    May 1, 2013

    • Chris

Sounds good. Should the images be printed or digital? I have a projector if needed. I agree that printed images are easier to view and are higher quality, plus we can pass them around.

      1 · May 2, 2013

    • Alfredo T.

A projector would help if the some members decide to show their work digitally, thanks Chris.

Apologies for the RSVP change. We have prior commitments that morning. At the time I said yes, there no date and time yet.

    May 2, 2013

  • Alfredo T.

So, a date is set and a location too. I ask the collaboration of the participants in suggesting how should the images be presented. In my opinion in screen is not a acceptable form but I am biased, being a printer, however I am open to the will of the group.

    May 2, 2013

  • Davidia

    I'm in ;-))

    May 2, 2013

  • Alfredo T.

I can host this meeting at my studio if the group agrees.

    May 1, 2013

  • Noel R

Gr8 idea. Just make sure critiques are constructive and the one whose photo is being critiqued, not get defensive. This should be an encouragement to all, so we will continued to be inspired to shoot.
