Help Portrait L.A. 2012

SAVE THE DATE! We are working with the LA organizers to work as a group at one location. The PATH MALL in Silver Lake! We will need photographers, MUAs, Stylists and anyone who just wants to help out and brighten someone's day. If you have equipment we can use, please let us know. When you RSVP, please let us know what you can do to help and what equipment you can share. If you do RSVP, please make sure you can make it. Attendance will be noted.

Please see below for more information on how you can help in this event. If you cannot make it to this location, please feel free to signify your intent to sign up for another location. There are multiple locations, including one in Pasadena and downtown LA. If you cannot join us for the entire duration, please inform us as well. We may need to break the group into two shifts. The actual start is 10 am and ends at 2 pm. We are adding a little time before and after to allow for setting up and packing.

Please send a comment on equipment you will bring, time available and preferred location. I hope that most will be able to come to the Silver Lake location. The more, the merrier!

About Help Portrait

Help Portrait is a global movement of photographers and stylists using their time, gear and expertise to give back to those in need by providing them with the opportunity to get a professional photograph taken and printed of themselves or their family.

The idea is that a photographer has the unique ability to help someone smile, laugh and to return their dignity. Combined with the skills of a stylist, which help discover each individual’s inherent beauty and value, as well as the warmth and welcoming presence of greeters, hosts and printers, and this one-day event has the ability to profoundly affect an individuals’ view of themselves.

We aim to provide the marginalized and in need people in our city with a portrait memorializing a day when they felt seen, heard and treasured. I believe that aside from providing the tangible gift of a photo, that we are feeding the soul with hope.

The Need:

The goal is to set up a full photography event with hair, make-up and photographers to shoot and print quality portraits, not for anybody's portfolio but to be given away. We desire for each volunteer to line up their talents and passions with their service in the community. Some of the specific needs that we have to help make this year’s events successful are:

 Photographers (and Photographers Assistants)

 Glam Squad (Hair & Make Up Artists)

 Hosts & Greeters

 Printing Station Team

 Design Team (Spruce up the location to look festive and welcoming and help market the events)

    Although the total guest count was lower than anticipated, I can say with total and complete confidence that the impact had on those present was INCREDIBLE. I've already touched base with the Site Coordinator at PATH and she has tons and tons of stories of the renewal of people's confidence and of how special of a gift this event was for them. You guys took the first wedding photos of more than one couple, the first pictures ever of several mothers' children, provided a space for family that had not come together in months to smile and laugh together and gave the best birthday present a woman had received in years. These people will treasure forever the absolutely stunning photographs that you took of them. I cannot thank you enough for treating them like rock stars and making dozens of individual's year.       Brewster, you can bring someone to help. Please read the description for the various volunteer positions that are available. Does she do hair or makeup?     Last year we were able to keep the images for our own personal ports. With the permission of the subject. Is that the same rule this year ?

      Sharon: We will not be taking all the photos from you or having them all deleted at the end of the event - so there is definitely the possibility that you could use a few images for your own use. It isn't something I'll be monitoring or paroling after the event. However, this really isn't an event designed for portfolio building. There is nothing wrong with that at all - just for this day we are trying to focus on giving the photos away and protecting the people that we get to take photos of. A lot of them do not want their images online or revolving around the city. We will have releases on site that they could sign - they are just not required to do so in order to participate. Hope that helps and makes sense.

      Just a general question really. I know intially they did not allow it. But I think sharing a photo with a story would bring more people to help portrait in the future , volunteers and people in need. Alot people have clue about this project.

    Hi Emily I have backdrops stands and 2 backdrops Black and a brown muslin. Also if you need extra photographers I'm willing to help. I primarily use a 50mm 1.8 and a Nikon D300. And I have my MacBook Pro with editing softwares like Lightroom, aperture, and Photoshop that can be helpful.

    Good Morning, I am super rxcited for this event. I have a couple of questions, What is the address for the place we park, what should we wear, will there be Help Portrait TShirts, and I was thinking about rounding up clothes, coats, blankets etc to put out for the people coming in for pictures. If this is allowed, maybe each of us can bring some bags for the people coming in. Is the Union Rescue near Union Station , within walking distance ???

      Christina! We'll need people to assist at each main photographer station, as well as help Host/Greet and man printing stations. Do you have any familiarity with quick photo edits? You could always bring a laptop with an editing program on it and help do a few color edits to the photos before printing. That would be such a help!

    I only have an umbrella, light stand, light meter and use a 580ii speedlight. A 1-light set-up. I can let any canon user use it. Or anybody can put his/her own speedlight and just use the stand and umbrella. I just can't remember how to use it so the only help I can do here is lend those stuff. :-)

I'm not a member of that other group so you'll just have to check out their plans. Emily, who is a new member of this group, is an organizer for Help Portrait LA and she is the one we're coordinating with.
