The Miracle Mile Art Deco walk and shoot

Who wants to do an architectural walking tour along the once famous Miracle Mile? First developed in the 1920s, the area started out as pasture land and oil fields to become a busy retail center. The Miracle Mile is an area in the Mid-Wilshire and Mid-City West regions consisting of a 1.5-mile (2.4 km) stretch of Wilshire Boulevard between Fairfax and Highland Avenues. With it's collection of museums (including LACMA, Petersen, and A+D), the tar pits and Art Deco structures, the area today remains a vibrant hub of art and culture. I have included some old photos to give you an idea of how it has evolved over the past 60 years.

We will start out before dusk and catch the golden hour. Expect it to be chilly as the sun goes down so dress for warmth and comfort. Wear comfortable walking shoes as the walk will cover over 2 miles. Be aware that some of the buildings may have security that discourages the use of tripods. Use flash, monopods or a fast lens with higher ISO to compensate.

I will send out the starting point and final itinerary a few days prior to the tour. Anyone who needs my contact info can email me after and I will gladly oblige. We can grab something to eat and drink for those intrepid souls who are still around at the end.

UPDATE: If anyone is interested, I will attend the Kubrick exhibit at 3 pm. This has received rave reviews and I might as well see it while we are in the neighborhood. If you have the time and want to see it for yourself, let me know and maybe we can get a group discount. I will need to know by January 10th. Thanks!

I was told by Anna that LACMA has an ongoing exhibit that might be of interest to attendees: Stanley Kubrick. I checked and Robert Mapplethorpe is also showing at the LACMA. While the latter is free with admission (FREE!!!), the Kubrick exhibit is $20 per person or $15 for a group of 10+. If we have enough interest, we can save 5 bucks to see Stanley's evolution as a photographer, filmmaker and artist. This ticket will also allow you to access the Caravaggio exhibit also going on now. Let me know if that piques your interest. I will need to purchase tickets in advance and we may need to meet earlier to attend the exhibit since these are timed entry tickets. I will need your responses by January 10, with a firm commitment to attend. Thanks!
