Discussion of "The Bone People" by Keri Hulme

Hey everybody, so the new book we will be reading for our next meetup is "The Bone People" by Keri Hulme. It was the 1984 winner of the Booker Prize and is readily available at Barnes and Noble and other bookstores as well as e-editions. It is somewhat long so that is why we won't be meeting until the 28th of February so as to give everyone enough time to finish it. The time is set for 7pm but I might try to find another place other than Stella's, obviously I will let everyone know if the location changes.

Happy Reading,

Noel

Amazing that such a hard read, that I didn't complete (when life interrupted) led to such a productive discussion for me! Thanks to all of you for that.

I got the book from Amazon and the binding wasn't very good. I couldn't read it because pages kept tearing out. - Jim.

It's all good Tim, don't worry you're not keeping anyone from joining the meeting. Hope everything is going okay.

I'm not going to be of any use in a discussion. Couldn't get book soon enough, had to go to Michigan, and now I'm dealing with some Medicare issues/opportunities. Book due back before I'll get done. If I'm holding anyone from showing up, tell me and I'll cancel my RSVP. If I can make it I'd like to 'audit' (I'll keep my mouth wide shut!).

Ah, I'll be out of town! I am flying out of town literally an hour before this discussion. So Sad. I loved this book and I spent 10 months living in New Zealand just last year. I visited the place where the book was set, the same town where Keri Hulme lives still, Okaritu. Spent a night camping there. I also visited a maori museum where they carve greenstone. Met some maori and they taught me and my husband how to hunt for shellfish. it was amazing.
I study literature for my job (I'm a PhD student in Slavic Literatures) and I was so excited to discuss something outside my area of expertise for once -- the whole time I was reading it in New Zealand I wished I had people to talk to about the book.
If we meet again next time I can bring some pictures of the town. So sorry to be missing this discussion. :( see you next time!

3 quick Bone People notes: (a) I'm next on the DPL list, so hope I get it in time to deal w/meaty bits. (b) A friend told me about a Māori Dictionary Online: http://www.maoridictionary.co.n... (c) Another told me they jumpped hard into the front of the book and much later discovered their copy has some key Māori bits at the back.
    Be healthy, Tim :D)

I didn't make the first meeting but I've been at Stella's for other book clubs and I think it's fine.

I'm very happy w/Stella's unless the number of attendees gets too large.

Noel, don't know what the others think, but IMHO, Stella's is great! Perfect atmosphere...
