Deadlands one-shot: The Wreck of the Annabelle Lee

  • Plot setup:

We received this telegram yesterday. Says it all, really, black and white. Do you remember Annabelle, back in her glory days? Nah, yer too young. The Annabelle Lee used to be the darlin' gem of the Mississippi, back before the war. Ain't one of these old codgers 'round here don't have some kind of fond mem'ry of her. Hell, I was once a deckhand on 'er meself. When the sun'd come up out on the river, hit her just right, how she'd shine...

But, anyway, them days is the past, and they ain't comin' back. The war ain't been kind to any of us, least of all Annabelle. We ended up usin' her mainly to move cargo on the Ohio. Leastaways, we did, up until about a year ago when she just plumb dissappeared. Just gone one day, never docks in to port, no one sees her, nothin'. Vanished. We figured the Confederates got her, maybe melted her down for cannons, or God knows what.

And now our "friend" here says he found her. Well, if he says he did, I believe him. I suppose it's no partic'lar secret - jus' within the Company, understan? - that we occasionally have business with our downstream neighbors. Man's gotta make a livin'. But to the point, I want you to put a team together. I'll take you to our people, who'll take you to their people, et cetra and such forth. Find the ship, find out if it's Annabelle. If it is, try to fix 'er up, get 'er home. I figure we owe her that much, at least.

Oh, one more thing: no hothead "patriots." We don't need to flare up the damn war over this. Best if you get her back up here the same way she got down there: without a soul knowin' a thing.

Now get goin'! The hell ya think I'm payin' ya for?

    Deadlands (Savage Worlds) One-shot!

I've been meaning to explore Savage Worlds as a system for some time, and figure there's no better way than a one-shot or two. Those unfamiliar with Savage Worlds are more than welcome - it'll be fairly combat-light, so you shouldn't have any trouble keeping up. If you're unfamiliar with Deadlands, you should youtube "The Backwater Gospel," which does a perfect job of capturing Deadland's Western-Horror atmosphere.

I'll make enough pre-gens for everyone to have some choice, but if you have a character type in mind, let me know.

    Hope to see you there!

AAAAUUUGGGHHH...I've got a Caps game at 12:30 p.m. that day. Otherwise, I'd definitely play.

This looks terrific. I've been curious about Savage Worlds, too, ever since they published some material based on Robert E. Howard's Solomon Kane, a character I dig. So I'll read up on the system a bit.

As for a character for the game, I'm not exactly sure who would be hanging out in southern Illinois during the civil war looking for a gig like this. A mercenary type? A riverboat hand who is out of work because of the war? A merchant's son who wants to scope out the Mississippi to look for promising business opportunities once the war is over? What do you think?

Jeez, I hate how this site mangles any kind of text formatting.

So anyway, the answer to who might be cooling their heels in or passing through safe, southern Illinois is "pretty much anyone." The pregens I've got planned are a varied bunch: a sharpshooter, a gunslinger, a mad scientist, an accountant, things of that general nature, but nothing too outlandish. An army deserter (from either nation) would make for a simple but interesting backstory, as would a failed prospector or a kid trying to earn some quick money to go off an become a failed prospector. It's all up to what you want to play, really.

Cool, thanks for the context. I'll have to read up a bit.

I've been wanting to play Deadlands for ever; I ran two campaigns but never got to try it as a player. My wife wants to play as well, she'll RSVP later.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
