Call of Cthulhu at Andres' Place!

Structure: The first in a series of one-shot adventures, which linked together might form the outline of a broader plot. Each adventure can be completed in a single evening. Players have the flexibility to drop in, drop out, go mad, or meet gruesome fates far worse than death however the cruel gods of fate and chance decree.

Premise: A classic adventure reinvented for a grim new age. There was a house you were afraid to walk past as a child. A nasty little yellow house...

Year the game is set: 2013

Setting: Ancient, changeless, shadow-haunted Arkham, whose sagging gambrel roofs brood out the centuries beside the waters of the darkly muttering Miskatonic.

Location: Adams Morgan, walking distance from Red and Green lines, direct on 42, 92, L2, and Circulator buses, among others.

Note: The location will be updated with an actual place, closer to the date.

Can everyone post/send to Jim your email addresses. We're trying to coordinate a next meetup time without the spamination replying to this site would cause.

So, who can make it on the 24th? (That will tell me whether to run the sequel or to come up with something entirely different for yo guys) I know Yuri can't make it. Anyone else?

    February 19, 2013

    • Stuart W.

I'll check with some other people I know that might be interested. Starting time would have to be 12:30.

      February 20, 2013

    • Nick

I wouldn't be able to make that, but feel free to roll without me....good luck!

      February 20, 2013

  • Jim T.

    Then how about this plan?

We meet on the 24th at Stuart's house, and depending on how many of us can make it, I run either a sequel to the first adventure or something entirely different?

    February 16, 2013

    • Stuart W.

Sounds great; I'm more than happy to host. My house is a 10 minute walk from Van Ness and Tenley, or if you want to drive, has plenty of street parking

      February 16, 2013

  • Jim T.

It looks like the best option might be to reschedule for another week when more people are free. Alan has the space next Sunday, but the Sunday after that (March the 3rd) I'd be happy to run either a sequel to the first scenario or something completely unrelated--whichever my players would prefer.

    February 15, 2013

    • Andres

I can also attend the 24th

      February 15, 2013

    • "DC" S.

I'm available the 3rd and could host if needed, but will not be available for the 24th.

      February 16, 2013

  • Jim T.

Point of clarification: I am proposing that we move game day back to Sunday, February 17th, and instead of playing a sequel to the adventure of he Little Yellow House, play an unrelated one-shot scenario.

    February 15, 2013

    • Andres

My Sunday is stretched, depending on location, I may be able to meet 5-7pm...

      February 15, 2013

  • Jim T.

    New plan!

Those of us who can make it Sunday, I have an unrelated one-shot adventure for you.

The year is 1992, George Bush Sr. is in the White House and the Cold War has just jolted to a close.

Roll me up a team of adolescent kid-detectives. Middle school adventurers between the ages of ten and thirteen. Come up with a name for their team ("The Mystery Club," "The Lich Steet Irregulars," "The Ten Cent Dectective Agency"--something like that.) One kid has a weird uncle named Marvin, who the rest of the family doesn't like to talk about.

  • Jim T.

Hmmm... how about President's Day, Monday the 18th?

    February 13, 2013

  • Jim T.

Looks like Saturday the 23rd is not the best option. How about his upcoming Sunday, the 17th? How many of us could make it?

23rd not great for me. I could do the 24th. I'm away March 2nd and 3rd but free the 9th and 10th

Hey folks. I just recently moved to DC and have been looking for a CoC group to join. It looks like you have a number of players already, but would you be willing to take on one more?

    February 9, 2013

  • Jim T.

So, let's figure out when to hold the sequel.

The Superbowl is this upcoming Sunday , so I don't imagine anyone will be available, and the next Sunday is Alan's turn to host a game in Andres' hall.

So what would everyone say to Sunday, February the 17th? Or possibly the 10th, if Alan has other plans.

    January 30, 2013

    • "DC" S.

The 17th works well for me. However, I will not be available on the 10th.

      January 31, 2013

  • Jim T.

I'm hearing some interest in keeping the same characters and moving them on to another adventure (probably through exploring some of the leads they found.)

So who votes for a sequel to "A Little Yellow House" and who votes for something entirely new and different?

    January 23, 2013

    • "DC" S.

I'd be happy to do a sequel, or move on to a new adventure if that's the consensus.

      January 23, 2013

    • Yuri

I would be thrilled to do a sequel. Given the way the game played out, I think John Atherton will probably not be reviewing the Corbett journals, but he will be seeking medical attention for his injuries. His primary interest will be in finding out why Lucy was at the house and who the person with the covered face was as well.

      January 23, 2013

  • Stuart W.

That was a lot of fun; thanks to everyone! I think the reason I, at least, charged ahead was that i wanted to try to get it done as a one shot! that had the advantage of keeping things moving quickly, but I would love to know more of the background.

  • Jim T.

In the end, the PCs solved the problem of the Little Yellow House much quicker than most groups, but they understood what happened less.

If anyone wants to have their character do more research on the house and on its former owner, Mr. Corbett, you're certainly welcome to try (make some rolls, suggest some places they'll go looking for information). But it might be kind of anticlimactic. Then again, if you have lingering questions that you feel the need to have answered...

And if anyone wants to go over Mr Corbett's notes in depth, and learn what he learned, it takes two days, adds 4 to your Cthulhu Mythos skill, and costs a d4 Sanity. There may also be metamathematical techniques (spells) buried in the notes.

And speaking of Mr. Corbett, everyone who participated in his demise (including John the park ranger) gains 1d6 Sanity for having obliterated his evil from the world.

    • Andres

Leo will express an interest in this, though it only applies for a future session, correct?

      January 21, 2013

  • Jim T.

Glad you guys liked it. This went very differently from every other time I've run the scenario. Normally the PCs explore the house a little, then they decide that they need to understand this situation better before going any deeper. Then they do a whole lot of research on the house, its history and the question of what might be going on there, and discover many troubling hints and signs (and leads to further adventures.) The tension builds the more they learn, and in the meantime the midnight assaults on Arkham's dreams grow worse and worse.

I've seen PCs take weeks of game time to work it all out before they face the final confrontation, equipped with knowledge and (if they've dug deep enough) magical protection.

This group, by contrast, charged straight into the situation with guns blazing, improvising on the fly as they went along. This got them pretty gnashed-up, but it worked. And it took them no more game time than it took to play the adventure.

    January 20, 2013

    • Andres

That was interesting how the characters (and maybe players) were emphasizing firearms, and the scenario basically nullified the effectiveness, and even amplified the issues of having/using firearms in Cthulhu -so well done there.

Hey. Thanks for running the meetup, Jim. And thanks for hosting it Andres. I had a great time.

I have - of course - gone to the wrong location. I will be at the right one shortly.

    January 20, 2013

  • Stuart W.

What time are we planning in ending? I have family visiting, so I'm hoping it'll be around 5.

    January 20, 2013

    • Andres

Since this is a one-shot, whenever you need to leave is fine- Jim will adjust as play continues.

  • Andres

To enter the building, use the call box to find "Chang, A" and press "Call" - that will ring my phone. If you come in on the Champlain st entrance, go up to the 4th floor and take a left out of the elevator, and walk all the way until you find the game. Call me if anything comes up[masked]

Can we get a confirmation comment here in this string for those planning on attending on Sunday? -Thanks!

    January 18, 2013

    • "DC" S.

Thanks for the quick creation guide Andres. Unfortunately I won't have time to draft a character before we start tomorrow. I'll try to show up a few minutes early to roll something up; conversely, I'd be happy to play something pre-generated. Cheers!

      January 19, 2013

    • Andres

Ok - we'll figure something out.

      January 20, 2013

  • Jim T.

Hate to impose, but if anyone could bring a set of laptop speakers tomorrow, I would be deeply grateful.

    January 19, 2013

    • Andres

All my speakers are fixed...sorry - anyone else?

      January 19, 2013

    • Stuart W.

      I can bring mine

      January 19, 2013

  • Jim T.

Shawn, if you like, I can send you a .pdf quick-start guide that contains additional details on character creation (income, starting wealth, Occupations and how they work, etc.

    January 19, 2013

  • Jim T.

The location has changed! We're going to be playing in Andres' hall at the address above (which is way quieter than The Board Room.) To get buzzed in, select "Andres Chang" from the directory.

    January 14, 2013

  • Jim

I'm going to suggest that you update the location on this one by this Friday, to ensure that those who want to play know where the game will be held, and whether or not they can get there (some of our members are metro-only).

    January 7, 2013

  • Mike O.

Something came up and I can not go now, I have changed my RSVP(from yes to no), sorry, hope you all have fun, and I hope some one else can go in my place.

    January 6, 2013

  • Jim T.

To respond to Andres' question, it would be great if players could create their characters in advance--that would save us a lot of valuable game time. But nobody should feel required to. I'll send everyone an e-mail with details on the types of characters that might work best, house rules, etc. But if you'd prefer to roll a character up on the spot, go right ahead.

    January 1, 2013

    • Andres

Sounds great! Looking forward to the email and house rules / discussion - and of course - the game session!

      January 1, 2013

  • Andres

What are the expectations for character creation here? Any chance we can work these out prior to the session so we can just show up with chars ready to roll?

I propose this joint to be the location in Dupont - let me know what you all think

I agree with Stuart. Thanks for your efforts in finding us a place. Hey, it it's too busy, we can do a pub crawl to find another place, if we need to :-)

Beth, the owner said at noon on Sundays it's totally dead - so we have very decent shots at the primo spot

Jim, I've given you hosting and editor rights for this one, and moved it to the main page. Let me know if you need any help with it!
