Edo Pop at THE JAPAN SOCIETY

We had an enjoyable evening last year at the Japan Society, so let's do it again! The latest exhibit is "Edo Pop".

Here's a description from their website: "Edo Pop playfully juxtaposes classic ukiyo-e prints from such masters as Katsushika Hokusai and Utagawa Hiroshige with contemporary works inspired by these artists and their works. Delve into alluring worlds created by the power of Edo period and contemporary popular culture in which change is the only constant."

How to meet us: I'll be waiting in the lobby near the admissions desk, holding my hand-scrawled MEETUP sign. Please meet us by 5:45pm. If you're late, ask a guard to direct you to the exhibit.

Admission: Great news--starting at 6pm, admission is free on Friday nights. That's why we're gathering at 5:45pm.  We do also have our own $1 fee to help defray the costs of maintaining this meetup group, payable to the organizer.

Lovely prints by masters Hiroshige and Hokusai, plus others I didn't know. Fascinating to learn about the celebrity coutesans of Yoshiwara. Great as always to see Donna, Sandy, and Toby as well as meet Jean for the first time. Most of us went to a very accommodating nearby diner and continued our conversations there. Good time!

I loved it.Enjoyed the art and the culture/history that accompanied each piece- woodblocks? A lot more to see and read.. Kobucki theater. Male dominated in all gender roles. Great event as usual .. I live nest door, but it took Linda our fabulous organizer to hold a meet-up to bring it to my attention. Nice dinner and pleasant Gothamites post event.
