I didn't even go to that event but I am disgusted by what I just read. $200 worth of drinks is too high to attribute to oversight. These free-loaders make outings look like drink-and-dash events; something reserved only for those with selfish, trashy attitudes. I don't know how many people appeared who did/didn't RSVP, but I'll assume perhaps some of the offending attendees were on the list(?).
I hope that the offending people are on the email list and are reading this now. They should note that they will not only get thrown out of the group, but that the bar/restaurant owners can easily elect to prosecute them for skipping out.
I am a little surprised the restaurant was a little unprepared, but that's beside the point. Hopefully this will never happen again.

Subject: [happyhrs] Ponte Vecchio Follow-up - Please Read
I have been notified that the bartender stated that lots of people left without paying for their drinks, more than $200.00 worth. Cheri and I will be covering this outstanding bill. This is unacceptable behavior, and it will not be tolerated in the future. This will never happen again. If we need to check and make sure you have paid your bill before you leave we will. Not paying your bill in the future will mean being thrown out of the group.
