Take A Hike to the US Tennis Open at Flushing Meadows

On Thursday August 22 Fred Howley will lead a group to the qualifying tournament for the last spots in the US Tennis Open at Flushing Meadows ; it is completely free. (rain Date Friday August 23

Because the parking and logistics are cumbersome, we'll take public transportation. MEET AT 11:10 A.M. at the information booth at the upper level at Grand Central Station and take the "7" subway train to the matches.
If you do want to drive down on your own and try to find us, I've put the directions by car off the Open website at the end of this memo and FredI will look for you at Court 11 at 1:00 PM. (We will probably arrive at the Open t around noon and grab a bite inside the comlex at a food court before heading to the matches.) .

The Open is very security conscious ; a list of items they prohibit is listed below. Any questions of any kind , call the Open at[masked]-6200.
All the matches are played on the outer courts, rather than in the stadium or grandstand. Naturally, the top-rated players do not need to qualify so they won't be playing but it is possible they might be practicing.
Because there is little shade and rain protection, a forecast a day or two ahead of either weather in mid or uppter 90s or a significant chance of rain will postpone until Friday. Right now the weather forecast for Thursday is upper 80s s with a 10% chance of rain. If weather should change, watch for an email either dnesday night or Thursday morming- hopefully by 8:30 AM

If you are coming, please let Fred know at [masked] .
