February Book Club Meeting

Hi Ladies,
sorry it has taken us a little while to get this meeting posted, but better late than never! Please note the slightly later meeting time for this month!

We'll be bringing in the Chinese New Year of the Horse with Kimberly McCreight's "Reconstructing Amelia." The book is available in the HK libraries and on the Kindle. Enjoy the book!

Here is a short summary:

When Kate, single mother and law firm partner, gets an urgent phone call summoning her to her daughter's exclusive private school, she's shocked. Amelia has been suspended for cheating, something that would be completely out of character for her over-achieving, well-behaved daughter.

Kate rushes to Grace Hall, but what she finds when she finally arrives is beyond comprehension. Her daughter Amelia is dead.

Despondent over having been caught cheating, Amelia has jumped from the school's roof in an act of impulsive suicide. At least that's the story Grace Hall and the police tell Kate. In a state of shock and overcome by grief, Kate tries to come to grips with this life-shattering news. Then she gets an anonymous text:

Amelia didn't jump.

Just joined and as much as I would love to come tomorrow I don't think I'll be able to read the book by then! Look forward to the next one though….do you decide on the next book at the meet up? xxx

Hi Emma, you're still welcome to come along anyway as long as you don't mind spoilers! The books are decided for us by the worldwide Girly book club. We will post the meeting and the book soon after this months meeting - watch this space!

    Hi Ladies,
Please note the meetup time has been updated to our usual 7.30 (I managed to get off work earlier this week!) Don't worry if you can't arrive until later, we're very informal!

I won't be able to attend, I have an important event to attend which I cannot get out of. I am disappointed since I was looking forward to discussing this book. I enjoyed reading it but did not like the characters. Having brought up a teenage daughter as a single parent, with a high pressure career, I did not think that Kate was entirely believable or maybe very naive. I've read other Diane Chamberlain books and they are an easy read!

      Hi Pam,
So sorry you can't make it - you'll be missed! I hope next months book is interesting for you too!

      February 17, 2014

  • Pam J.

What I meant to say was that I thought it was similar to Diane Chamberlain's style.

Unfortunately I didn't find the book in any bookshop. So I won't be able to come. Have fun and see you next time.

Hi Gina, sorry you couldn't find the book. Dymocks tell me they have copies in their Repulse Bay branch and it's also in the public libraries. Hope to see you next time!
