Let's Meetup, plan out some summer trips, and eat some backcountry cooking!

*******ATTENTION: DETAILS CHANGED DUE TO WEATHER*********

NOTE: DATE CHANGE TO TUESDAY, MAY 20, 2014

As the weather (finally!) breaks, a new backpacking season is upon us. It's time to put away the long johns, puffy jackets and hand warmers, and break out the bandanas! As we kick off the 2014 HW season, let's get together and plan some trips. Some ideas that have been kicked around include trips "out West", one that is family-friendly/kid-friendly, one for the doggies, and even one that concentrates on bare-bones survival. Honestly, I can't see why we shouldn't do all of these! Bring your work schedules, vacation dates and availability to this meetup and we'll get some trips on the books (or iCalendar's for us pretentious Mac users ;)!

Since we've been cooped-up all (!) winter long, I'm doing this meetup picnic-style. I'll secure the pavilion ahead of time and provide some liquid refreshments (no alcohol per Metroparks rules). I will be grilling up some hot dogs/burgers and some portabellas for you non-carnivores (I'm looking at you, Ultralight/Nick!) I'd ask each person/couple/family to bring a small backpacking-inspired side dish to complement the festivities. This is a great chance to practice some of your trail-inspired meal options or get some opinions on your backcountry kitchen skills. The pavilion does not have electricity, so no crockpots; but we will have grills and a fire going. Depending on the RSVP list, I'd ask that you bring enough for 10-20 people...keeping in mind that 10-20 people will be bringing food (think tapas-style, small plates!) As you RSVP, please either post a message to the group with your dish idea or send me a private message. I will provide paper plates, cups, and plastic wear. If you have a camp chair or 2, it might be a good idea to bring those along. I'd also advise on headlamps and lanterns if possible. There is a small walk from the parking lot to the pavilion, which is next to the river. There are restrooms at this location. Please follow this link for information/map to the area: http://www.clevelandmetroparks.com/Main/Maple-Grove-Picnic-Area.aspx

This meetup is open to all members and potential members! Bring friends, family and trail buddies.

Also, for the 2014 season, we will be fundraising to support the group's administrative costs.  Some ideas have been thrown out there, but I'm always open to suggestions.  For this meeting, the Official 2014 Hopeless Wanderers bandana will be on display, and possibly available for purchase...more details to follow.

As usual, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email me directly - [masked]

Was there ever a date set for the Black Forest trip?

    May 24

    • William A. W.

Hi Ruth. I was late and not sure if we met. My brother Tom and I have talked about this trail (I've hiked it twice and love it). Not sure if anyone else has or has plans on creating a trip for it. I personally haven't picked a date, but if you have a suggestion (after my Mt. Rogers trip) if you're up for the challenge of that trail, let me know.

Great meetup! I am looking forward to future trips. P.S. - I will be in Portland, OR from 8/7/14 - 8/12/14 ... any takers for something spontaneous? I plan to connect with another meetup group before heading onto my next destination.

Thank you for hosting, Michael, and thanks everyone for all the food preparation! Was surprised the reschedule coincided with my work schedule! Probably won't be able to make any more of these.

Sorry I was so late, trying to get work things done prior to my Red River Gorge trip this weekend. Nice to see everyone that was still there! And I second Lori's suggestion, at least during the warm weather months, it would be nice to have something like this a bit more frequently.

  • Lori

This was a fun get together... We should think about doing it once a month. At a park or someone's house (for beer purposes.). Good meeting Kowalski

Sorry, i will not be able to make it. Maybe another time.

    May 20

I can't get there until 7:30. If you don't see me by then, that means I got delayed in CLE and probably won't make it.

    May 20

  • William A. W.

I'll be late, but I'll be there. Tom is driving separately and will bring the food.

  • Laureen D.

Is everyone sure about this, tornado and thnder storms could continue tommorow night. I think we should all play it safe.

    May 14

    • Michael K.

Laureen, I'll see how the weather goes tomorrow. If it looks at all unsafe, I'll cancel. Rain is one thing, sharknados are another!

      May 14

    • Jason

      so sharknados or no sharknados?

      May 15

If anyone is interested in hammock camping this through comparison review just went up http://www.outdoorgearlab.com/Hammock-Reviews

    May 14

    • Nick!

Nice comparison! I can personally attest for the Warbonnet Blackbird, which won the Editors' Choice award in the comparison. Excellent quality, loads of features, and an all-around solid hammock. Even though I found a hammock to be a wonder drug for taking a nap, sleeping in one overnight was difficult, perhaps because I sleep on my side. Even while sleeping on the diagonal, with a built-in foot box, I just couldn't reach dreamland the way I do while ground sleeping :-/ Nonetheless, still a kick @ss hammock!

      May 14

    • Jason

if you must be a side sleeper then you might want to look into a "bridge hammock", but they usually weigh more.

Looking for suggestions... for a two man tent, light weight, ample head room, all seasons, affordable :).

    April 30

    • William A. W.

Finally, a true, dedicated 4 season tent would not be a good choice as they are heavier and generally unnecessary unless you truly want to camp in weather with lots of snowfall or high winds. Most 3 season tents work just fine (like all of the ones I just mentioned) with general winter camping around these parts.

      Good luck shopping,

      Bill

      April 30

    • William A. W.

If it's just you and your gear however, you can save a lot of weight and pack space by looking into a 1 1/2 person to 2 person tent. Try the Tarptent Rainbow or the Six Moon Designs Skyscape Trekker (that's the one Tom and I each had on the trip. It's only 24 oz). I don't know if you got a chance to see them up or not, but I think it's plenty big enough for me (but not with a 60 lb pack inside of it).

      April 30

  • William A. W.

Tom and I are going to leave on Friday morning for Trail Days and "meet up" with another MeetUp group.

We will bring an assortment of dehydrated meals that we will make so people can taste some of the things we bring onto the trail. We will rehydrate them at the picnic (with our own stoves) so people can see how its done.

    April 28

    • William A. W.

Actually, we will be car camping. It is a festival of sorts. Gear manufactures will be there and there is a parade on Saturday. Check it out here: http://www.traildays....

    Hello,

I am a recent transplant to Cleveland from San Jose, CA. I absolutely love nature and did a lot of hiking and cycling out there (and some backpacking a long time ago). I might join you guys but I eat paleo-style so I can try to come up with something meat & vegetables for you guys, I usually just cook for myself!

    • William A. W.

This is a great group. I'd suggest signing up and showing up. Contact Mike for food options, I'm just bringing samples of dehydrated foods. Hope to meet you there!

Love the idea of camp food. That being said, I'm going to provide one of my all time favorite trail dishes. That dish being whatever El Cap cooks!

    April 15

  • Shelly D.

Glad I'm off that evening! I'll bring some Ramen Noodles (haha, just kidding). Will most likely bring a dessert involving pumpkin & sunflower seeds, almond butter, and honey.

Well Mike, it appears at this time that Tom and I will be at trail days in Damascus, VA when this happens. Keep me posted as to what transpires.
