Re: [french-504] Tutoring is Teaching, Not Just Conversation

Hi,

I am a native French speaker and know french grammar, conjugaison, vocabulary very well.  I tutor French on a regular basis and correct the student when needed.
Native French tutor/teacher or not, it doesn't matter as long as you are a good tutor/teacher and know your subject well.
Thank you very much!!!

The best system seems to be having both organized instruction to learn the grammar, rules and exceptions, and correct pronunciation, and some immersion to practice, practice, practice.

Note to learners: Native speakers can be so gratified that you are "even trying" that they will just ignore dreadful errors in grammar and pronunciation. So do not mistake being able to converse in a social setting with speaking the language correctly.  Think of the number of mistakes we all ignore  when conversing with people who do not speak English as a first language. Chinglish and Hinglish are not English, and Franglais is not French.

Amen, Elizabeth.

I am an ESL teacher who speaks Spanish and French, and I get tired of sanctimonious people in the business world who still believe that “sink or swim” is best, even for adults.  While that may work for picking up vocabulary, it absolutely does not work for grammar.  As you say, it takes a trained professional to be able to explain the grammar, rules, and exceptions.

As various people inquire about finding or working as a language tutor, everyone should keep in mind that the ability to speak a language fluently is not the same skill as being able to teach it.

Teaching is a specific skill set, requiring a sense of the structure of the information to be communicated, in this case an analytical understanding of the grammar and correct pronunciation, and the ability to communicate that information and the ability to identify and correct errors and a sense of what sorts of drill should be assigned so that the student makes progress between lessons.  This is particularly critical when teaching children.  Most people would not be able to explain the grammar of sentences and idioms that we all use daily to another adult, much less to a child. A good tutor needs to be able to explain why something is said one way in English and a different way in French, for example. A tutor's goal is to teach the structure of the language, so that the student can learn patterns and therefore continue to learn from reading and listening, as well as correct pronunciation of sounds that do not exist in English.

Coming over and chatting in French with someone who wants to learn the language is not tutoring. A good tutor is someone who knows both how to teach and how to speak French. If you have to choose between a native speaker without teaching experience and a trained teacher for whom French is a second language, the trained teacher will get you better results.
