Itinerary:

  • Saturday morning - depart Houston for Reimer's Ranch around 8 or 9. Arrive there by 12. We can all meet in the parking lot to go down to Dead Cat's Wall. If you don't find the group, please meet down at that wall. I can explain how to get there if you haven't been before.
  • From 12-5 or so we will be climbing/hanging out at Reimer's. We may leave Dead Cat's Wall at some point to check out some of the other walls, but we won't do that until everyone is with the group.
  • Around 5 we will hike back up to the cars. For those of you that want to join, we will be going to grab burgers/drinks at The Front Porch in Austin.
  • After dinner, we will head out to Pace Bend to set up camp. Amy will already be set up, so we will look for her area and try to camp there or get the spot next to her. We have enough tents for everyone. We are hoping to be able to have a fire, but it depends if the burn ban is on when we arrive. So that will be TBD. We can buy wood at the campsite.
  • Sunday morning - maybe get breakfast tacos at the gas station near Reimers or maybe just eat our own food...play it by ear.
  • After breakfast, we will head to Reimers to go to the North Shore for climbing for the day.
  • After climbing, we will head back to Houston - potentially stopping in Austin for a quick bite to eat before we get on the road.

What you need to bring:

  • Your own harness and shoes.
  • Snack foods for climbing and breakfast (although maybe we can go somewhere for breakfast Sunday morning).
  • Water - bring yourself a few bottles.
  • Non-flip flop footwear to walk to the climbing walls (I have a "lovely" story about that one...).
  • Your warmest sleeping bag - the temperature will be dropping Saturday night to close to freezing.
  • An airmattress/foam pad - anything to put under your sleeping bag to retain heat better. If you don't have an airmattress or foam pad, bring a large blanket or two.
  • Pillow!
  • Flashlight or headlamp.
  • Clothing for cool weather (sweater/jacket/hat etc.).

Carpooling: Looks like Tom and Dave are both able to bring a few people. Viviana will be heading out with her group separately. IF YOU WANT TO CARPOOL, PLEASE EMAIL ME YOUR CONTACT INFO AND LET ME KNOW IF YOU WANT TO CARPOOL AND WHERE YOU ARE LOCATED. I WILL PUT YOU IN TOUCH WITH TOM/DAVE SO WE CAN ALL COORDINATE THAT PART. :)

My Contact Info: [masked] and [masked] (I check my email regularly, so feel free to email or call/text)

Note that there is terrible cell phone coverage once we are at the climbing walls at Reimer's. If you are late and meeting us at the wall, please ask when you enter the park for an explanation of how to find Dead Cat's Wall. They are pretty good with directions. Or ask other climbers you see as you walk down into the crag.

See you all this weekend!

Hi all...I found out that there is a burn ban so no fire :( Does anyone has a gas heater that you attaches to a propane tank? If so, please bring it. At least that way we can hang out instead of go to sleep early. I have a propane tank I can bring.

Never mind the contact info issue - I can email the Attendees on here to get the conversation started. :)

I am getting together with Dave and Viviana tonight to discuss details for this weekend. I have been out of town and unavailable to iron out the details. We will let you know soon! Can everyone send me their email address and phone numbers if they haven't already done so? I have some, but not all of the contact info. Thanks!

Not much I can contribute in resources (and even less in climbing expertise) but I can offer car space for 3-4 people, will be heading from near downtown.

Also yep if we could have a definitive breakdown of people/tents/camping equipment etc so we know what stuff to acquire this week, that would be really useful.

I've got a harness and shoes, but that's about it. Anything else I need to procure? Also, who all is driving and is anyone carpooling?

    February 24, 2013

I do not have the climbing book - usually borrow from people there (but need to buy the new book). i also need a stick clip, so will likely stop by REI saturday morning before we go to reimer's.

Hi Amy, thanks for joining us. Some of us won't be coming in until Saturday, so we may look for you at your campsite. Maybe you can save us a few spots. Everyone - It looks like we have at least 3 ropes and several quickdraws. Does anyone have the Austin Climbing book with routes, etc? If not, I can get one.

    February 24, 2013

Hi. Looking forward to climbing with you. I have a 60m rope and 12 quickdraws. I'll be camping Fri and Sat nights. Can also climb Fri and Mon if anyone is available. Driving a blue Forester with IL plates.

Hi all - I believe there are also a few folks coming who are not in this group. I will be driving out Saturday (have a business meeting that morning) and Candice will be coming with me as well as our 2 boys.

Laura and I will hash out the details and figure out who is camping on Friday and/or Saturday and let everyone know.

Looking forward to it! Looks like a good group!!

Jeff - we are doing only sport climbing, so definitely bring out your rope and quickdraws - i will have mine too. Kyle - We will be driving through Austin, so someone can scoop you for sure. I will start an email chain later this week and we can all work out the details. I look forward to meeting you guys! Laura

Hi there, my name is Jeff, I'm new to this meetup. I have a 70m rope and 5-6 quickdraws to contribute (assuming we will be doing mostly sport?)

Kyle - I can probably scoop you on our way through Austin assuming there is room in the car! What's your cell #?

  • Kyle B.

Hey, I'm an Austin climber, would like to make it out there as well; any of you passing through somewhere that would make a carpool possible, or do you guys not go through Austin on the way?

Shoot...I'll be in Utah that weekend snowboarding (at least it's another outdoorsy tradeoff). I definitely want to get out of the gym and outdoors again, so count me in for the next one!

Looks like I will be in California that weekend, but hope you all have a good trip! Maybe next time!

For any beginners that want to come out, please try to go indoors ahead of time to learn how to belay and the basics. Although, we can definitely teach you everything that weekend - but we likely will not let you belay others if you are a beginner. Also, you will need your own harness and shoes. I'm not aware of any place that rents these. You can purchase them at REI or Whole Earth or try to get a good deal online somewhere. Or if anyone knows of a rental place, please post a comment. Thanks!!

I'm new to this group and haven't been rock climbing in almost 15 years, except a few Boy Scout climbs a couple of years ago at TRG. I'm a bit rusty and will try to get by TRG before we go and do a little climbing. I have a new harness, chalk, and shoes but that's it. What else is needed? (Not with regard to camping, have all that). Do you guys try to camp together? Trying to get an idea of how it goes on these outings. I will be visiting friends/colleagues earlier Friday but free later in the afternoon if anyone is getting there that evening.

    February 5, 2013

    • Laura

Depending on how many people come, we can try to camp all together. Viviana told me we can fit about 4 tents on one site.

Pace Bend Park is actually much closer than Perdernales and the weekend climbing pass is included with the campsite fee. I've only done primitive camping since we're really there just to sleep. They do have restrooms with TP, but no running water.

Making a reservation is a good idea, I'll look into their cancellation policy. But, I'd rather be safe than not have a site.

    Guest is maybe.

The camping I have done around there was with the Boy Scouts, just a few months ago. The only place I am aware of that is reasonably close is Perdernales Falls. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/state-parks/pedernales-falls

What type of camping do you prefer? Primitive or cabin? They have reservations online for campsites. Probably not a bad idea since it may be pretty weather and busy. I haven't decided on camping or hotel.

I may be in San Francisco that day, but if not, I will try to come! Sounds like fun!

I lead climb[masked]s only. Dave will likely go and he can lead harder routes. My friends in Austin can lead harder routes as well. Also, there are always extra people at the walls that can help set routes for us. I'd like to get some good[masked] leaders out with us and will be talking to all my climbing friends in Austin to come on out. As for camping, there are definitely people from Houston that are interested in camping. I don't have time to plan out that part right now because work is so busy and i leave on a trip in a few weeks - so if anyone wants to take the lead on figuring out those details, that would be great. I can update the event once we figure it out. Shoot me an email with any ideas you have.

    Should be a great time!!

Hey Laura! I was going to email the group to find out about and outdoor trip. So, Yes! I'm in.. are we camping also? Do you lead climb?

    January 30, 2013

  • Gary M.

This sounds fun. I am fairly novice, mostly in the Texas rock gym in the past, but game.
