Volunteer and Rappel for Make-a-Wish Foundation (in Austin)!

The Make-a-Wish Foundation is looking for ropes volunteers to help out with the Over the Edge fundraiser it holds in Austin. Participants of the event raise money for the Foundation and as a reward get to rappel 32 stories down One American Center. Rock climbers make great volunteers because we are already familiar with the concept of rope safety. However, no experience is needed - they provided training on the Friday for everyone. AND the best part is that you get to rappel (32 stories!!!!) during training so that when you volunteer on the Saturday and/or Sunday that you know what people are going through mentally and can encourage them to go for it!

I volunteered last year and had a great time! It was a great feeling to help people build up the courage to go over the edge. I'm hoping to go again this year, but it depends on work at this point. I wanted to share the info though in case any of you would like to go. Here is the info on how to sign up as a volunteer with Over the Edge and more info on Make-a-Wish.

Hey all! You should have gotten a confirmation email from Over-the-Edge by now if you properly signed up. Make sure you do the online training on one of the two next Mondays. I will be working from our Austin office on the Friday and will be at the training that afternoon. We can all meet up there at the training. Post-training, we can all go out for dinner/drinks if you want! I am volunteering on Saturday and plan on doing the same after the event is over. My number is[masked], so feel free to text when you get to Austin and we can meet up there. Looking forward to it!!

Hi everyone, I'm thinking of camping at Pace Bend for this event. Was anyone else considering that or are you getting hotel rooms in Austin? Let me know maybe we can coordinate something. So looking forward to this event!!

James - is your group still raising funds? I can join in if you decided to do the group option.

Hi Laura, i (and a group of about 8-12 friends would love to do this...but we are not sure if we could raise $1,500 in time. I called and spoke with the organization and they mentioned we could do a group raise/account instead and the amount the group raised would determine how many peoplr could attend. Do you think that may be a possibility?

Hi James - I actually just posted this so people could register as volunteers! But that's nice you guys want to raise $$. As a volunteer, you don't pay to rappel. You do training as a ropes volunteer on the Friday and then volunteer your time to help others do the rappel on the Saturday and/or on the Sunday. Last year I just volunteered on the Saturday because I didn't have time to help both days. If you go to the overtheedgeusa.com link I posted in the description there is a form you fill out to sign up as a ropes volunteer.

I forgot to repeat that you get to rappel during training on the Friday - and then you volunteer your time on saturday/sunday to help others. :)

This is a great event to get involved in to help them out! They need so many volunteers to make this event happen. It truly was a great time last year. I'm really looking forward to going again.
