A Socialist Perspective on Popular Culture and Art

This week, we analyze popular culture and art from a Marxist perspective. We will be reading Adorno's essay, 'The Culture Industry and Mass Culture' by Theodore Adorno. Adorno is a fairly good Marxist culture critic; the only problem is that he's a bit cynical and pessimistic. However, if you filter out some of his elitist propositions (and particularly his controversial claims about Jazz Music), then you end up with a fairly decent Marxist analysis of popular culture.
