February meetup: "Dan Leno and the Limehouse Golem" by Peter Ackroyd

We will be discussing "Dan Leno and the Limehouse Golem" by Peter Ackroyd.

Hope to see you there.

Dan Leno, the great music hall comedian, was known in his lifetime as 'the funniest man on earth'. So how could he have been involved in one of the most curious episodes in London's history when, in a short period during the autumn of 1880, a series of murders was attributed to the mysterious 'Limehouse Golem'?

In Peter Ackroyd's novel, the world of late-Victorian music hall and pantomime becomes implicated in a number of sinister scenes and episodes, and the connection between the light and dark sides of nineteenth-century London begins to attract such contemporary figures as George Gissing and Karl Marx. But there are also less well-known characters who play a significant role in the narrative. What, for example, is the secret of Elizabeth Cree, about to hang for the murder of her husband?

Hi all. To anyone coming, a table is booked as always. I've asked for our usual table in front of the bar (when you come in with the bar ahead of you, turn right for a couple of steps, then look to your right and there's an oval table in the window alcove there).
The table is booked in my name (Justin) if you get there before me. If they've put us somewhere else, have a good look round the pub or ask the staff. Once I get there, I'll put the Meetup sign on the table. Or look for copies of the book.

Finally, don't forget to come armed with a suggestion or two for our April book as we always choose the book two months in advance.

I'll be there! I'm completely new to this though so, apologies in advance for the silly question, do I just turn up and look for people with copies of Dan Leno?

Hi Zoe. Essentially yes! We try and have a regular table but it depends where the pub chooses to put us. I'll send an email round a couple of days before the meetup. But, in essence, have a good look round the pub until you find us.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
