IRELAND TRIP! THE GENEALOGY EVENT - DISCOVER YOUR IRISH HERITAGE

UPDATES: (Going forward will provide updates at the top and above the ***** noted below.  Additionally I will keep messages minimized so as not to bombard you with emails!)

AS AT JUNE 18:

SEEKING STORIES OF THE GENEALOGY NATURE

If you are intending to attend and/or have purchased tickets there is interest in hearing about your Irish family history - be it the challenges, the discoveries, what you are hoping to gain from the event etc.  Whether you are US based or know someone / are someone based in Ireland I'm interested in putting you in touch with the person who is writing an event release.  Simply let me know and I can then coordinate next steps.  You'd only need to offer up about 10MIN or so by phone and share what you'd be open to having shared in a release.  Who knows if it's included, could help you with some further info!

ONE ON ONE CONSULTATIONS WITH APGI

Association of Professional Genealogists in Ireland will now be conducting 20MIN consultations for those interested in directing specific research queries.  A prebooking option will be available and will be sent out to all ticketed attendees.  This is included in the ticket price.

More updates to come...!  Encourage your friends and family to come to make this a fun event full of genealogy enthusiasm!

Please see website www.thegenealogyevent.com for the latest information on the program.

As always email me with any questions.  The countdown is on...only 2 more months!

ADVANCED SEGMENT

Fiona Fitzsimmons, Research Director for Eneclann is now confirmed for the Advanced Segment, which is only taking place on Sat. Aug 22nd.  She will deliver two workshops in the (3) hour time span:

1. Registry of Deeds: How to find the documents you want, and interpret them

2. Records of Children Raised in Care in Ireland: 1840-1995.  With the increased focus in this area, especially brought about with the movie Philomena this was a hugely popular session she first delivered in November in Ireland.  Attendees were waiting outside in the rain to listen for it.

The countdown is now on...only 7 months away until The Genealogy Event (Ireland). It is hoped that there will be a good mix of locals and internationals at the event - that would make for fun in terms of expanding knowledge on each others' countries and record keeping tips!

OTHER CONFIRMED SPEAKERS

I imagine a number may be unfamiliar, however they are well known speakers on the Irish genealogy circuit and have come highly recommended and/or am familiar with their delivery.

Irish Ancestry Research Centre (IARC), exhibitor at The Genealogy Event in NYC, has now joined on as Event Partner.  I will in fact be meeting with them at the end of this month so may have some new collaborations / ideas to share.

LIMERICK

The setting will be in Limerick, named the City of Culture for 2014 - the first Irish city to be named so and thus promises a year full of celebration. Limerick is undergoing a magical transformation that has been readily kickstarted by the renovation of King John's Castle. St Mary's Cathedral, built in the 12th century which I finally visited last visit: spectacular.  Might I add these plus many other destinations are only a short walk from the hotel!

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The website (www.thegenealogyevent.com) has now been updated with key details, including travel information.  I would encourage you to at minimum book your rooms so as to secure space at the conference hotel.  It is so well placed!

Imagine being immersed in Irish genealogy...in Ireland!

Last let your friends and family now.  My own personal goal is to see representation from each county of Ireland - be it by residence or by roots...we'll see how well I can achieve it.  I'm already at one with Limerick, possibly two with some indirect ancestors from Tipperary!

Any questions let me know.  I will be your meetup 'guide' in Ireland.

Can I say I'm excited?! With the format of this event I think I might be able to partake in some of the learning sessions too!

  • HUBERT O.

I intend travelling to Limerick for the August get together. I live in Dublin, originally from Offaly. My parents were from Laois and Cavan. I sought help from the group last year to try and find a Grand Uncle of mine (John Whelan) who landed on Ellis Island Jan 13th 1893 and went to Bedford Mass. Neither the group or myself could advance the search. At a family gathering last July (85 attended) I discovered my cousin had a huge interest in tracing her families. (she is also a Grand Niece of John and lives in Laois). She did trojan work and after 5 months searching uncovered a facinating, sad and indeed tragic history which eventually ended up back in Ireland in 1982. I hope to give the story in detail to you in Limerick. look forward to seeing you all. HUBERT.
