I'm looking for a book on the famine, particularly in Kerry and the southwest of Ireland. Not a novel, but a history telling impact on the lives of everyday folks. Looking for background information as I am writing family history and my great, great grandparents and great grandparents would have lived through the famine of 1847; my grandparents would have lived through famines of later years. Any recommendations? Thanks! Joanne

Hi Joanne,

The Irish Family History Forum is buying this new book published 2012:

I hope to have it soon and it would be available at our groups' library within the Family History Center, in Plainview, Long Island. I haven't checked yet to see what NY libraries would have it.

Regards,
Mike Carragher

Mike, thanks very much....this is a good lead. I'll see if I can get it through Barnes & Noble with a discount. $75 (list price) was a bit more than I hoped to spend. Joanne

Mike, FYI, amazon.com has this book for $49 new and less for used copies. Thanks for the recommendation. I splurged on a new copy for myself this morning. Best, Joanne

Mike, my copy of the Atlas of the Great Irish Famine just arrived today from amazon.com. Thank you so much for suggesting it. Despite the sad subject matter, it is a beautiful book.....lovely rich illustrations and maps, thick creamy paper, beautifully bound. The book is several hundred pages and a large, coffee-table size. It weighs about 10 lbs. according to the shipping label. I looked through it very quickly and it has lots of information about the famine in Kerry and other parts of Munster. Just what I was looking for! It will make good reading and will be an excellent source to set the context of my family's life in Kerry at that time. Thanks again. All the best, Joanne
