IBG Tuesday Meetup - The Ballad of Peckham Rye by Muriel Spark

Hi All,

We discussed The Human Stain by Philip Roth at our last Tuesday Meetup.

Most of us ( not me :-( ...) finished the book - it was a fantastic read, and so wonderfully dense that I found my self often rereading passages over and over.

I confessed at the start of the meetup that i felt like a lot of this book was over my head. It was a brilliant insight into a very specifc aspect of America's human history as well as a huge perspective into the concepts of self identity, freedom, propriety, political correctness, family, of course, race, to name just a few.

This is a book that you will not forget you have read - for all the right reasons.

We then voted for out next book..... hmmm...

The choices were:

Herzog by Saul Bellow ( 1 vote )

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy by John le Carre ( 9 votes )

The winner was

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy by John le Carre ( 9 votes )

The silence following the vote was however, deeafening. It seemed that le Carre only made it because the prospect of Bellow was too awful.

There was then an insipred suggestion from rouge members of the group that another book be put forward.....

The new suggestion was:

The Ballad of Peckham Rye by Muriel Spark

There was then a revote, much to my chagrin.... and the outcome was

Herzog by Saul Bellow ( 0 vote )

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy by John le Carre ( 3 votes )

The winner was..

The Ballad of peckham Rye bu Muriel Spak ( 7 votes )

The synopsis below is from Waterstones:

"A man of devilish charm and enterprising spirit, Dougal Douglas is employed to revitalize the ailing firm of Meadows, Meade & Grindley. He succeeds, but not quite in the way his employer intended. Strange things begin to happen as Dougal exerts an uncanny influence on the inhabitants of Peckham Rye and brings lies, tears, blackmail and even murder into the lives of all he meets, from Miss Merle Coverdale, head of the typing pool, to Beauty, the resident femme fatale, and even Mr Druce, the unsuspecting Managing Director himself"

Despite dissention in the ranks I am looking forward to reading this.

See you then.

Hannah :-)
