Announcing a new Meetup for The Islington Book Group! What
: IBG Tuesday Meetup - The Catcher in the Rye AND Franny and ZooeyWhen
: Tuesday, November 2,[masked]:00 PMWhere
: 25 canonbury lane
We had a great meetup on Tuesday night where we discussed Good to be God by Tibor Fischer. At first only two of us confessed to liking the book and finding it funny but on further discussion more and more of us agreed that it did have a fantastic start and flashes of brilliance throughout.
Most of us felt that it could have been shorter and had less "deadends" in it but there was a grudging consensus by the end that it was an easy and enjoyable read ( and would have been even better had the editor been stricter ).
The main themes seemed to be the need for some people to have the illusion of a god to comfort and placate then in times of hardship and the opportunity that presents to unscrupulous types. Another major thread was the main characters inability to capitalise on his initial intention to trick and swindle - his essential personality was to be good, the author thought that this was true of most people. The message of life being a series of checks and balances was also addressed with good deeds being rewarded and bad deeds being punished.
We were inspired to read his earlier work as well, we felt that it would probably be better than this, his eighth book.
We decided on TWO books for the next meetup. We had voted for The Catcher in the Rye and Sharona informed us that it is not his best book!! Franny and Zooey which we will also be reading is apparently very short and written in a different style to The Catcher in the Rye so, for the first time for us, we will be reading two books by the same authour so that we can compare them.
Please don't leave it too late to get Franny and Zooey - it'll probably be harder to source than The Catcher in the Rye.
See you then :-)
p.s. Please remember to bring along your suggestions for the next meetup
