WELCOME to the Jacksonville Shetland Sheepdog Meetup Group !!! We are glad to have you as a member of our Sheltie community and look forward to meeting you and your Sheltie at future meetups. For many, this may be the first time you have considered a more organized way of getting together with other Shelties and their owners. We want to share the below in hopes that it might help make the most of the group and experience. If you are shy or unsure of anything (or have a suggestion), please feel free to contact any of the organizers ? via the board or privately (using the envelope icon). Organizers are listed at the far left on most of the pages. Don't forget to visit all areas of the site : message board, files, photos and EVENTS !!
What are some things that a meetup group CAN do ?
Provide people with similar interests a place to share their passion ? in our case, Shetland Sheepdogs.
Create an easy format in which to communicate and organize get togethers
Help create a support group that shares info/networking to both new and longtime Sheltie owners
What are some things that a meetup group CAN'T do ?
LIABILITY WAIVER - Organizers, assistant organizers and members are not responsible for injuries or losses that might occur to either pets, humans or personal items. Each individual is responsible for their pets, kids and personal items at all times. By attending any meetup.com event - regardless of whether you signed up, RSVP'd or just show up, attendee accepts ALL responsibility for ANY thing that might occur as a result of participation.
Take the place of a veterinarian or trainer, etc. Advice received from any member of a meetup is strictly that - advice that may have worked for them. We always recommend that additional qualified sources be contacted for health or behavioral issues, such as a veterinarian, trainer (positive reinforcement recommended) or qualified behaviorist.
How does an actual get together work ?
Events are usually suggested by members (organizers included) and often will coincide with other pet or community events. Feel free to throw out some ideas !!
Once an event is scheduled, an organizer will place it under the events section and try and provide as much info about where and when. Please remember that sometimes the info can be fluid (subject to changes) as times and other details are firmed up.
Members are asked to RSVP if they can make the event (or give a maybe or no)
The message board is often used for individuals to toss out questions or discuss an event
ATTENDANCE - please remember that meetups are entirely voluntary and of a casual nature. Those that have RSVP'd (organizers included) do their very best to make it if they have said they would, but ? sometimes things come up that prevent perfect attendance. At least one organizer tries to attend each event, but sometimes that just isn?t possible. Members can still enjoy getting together and meeting new owners and Sheltie. Don't let the absence of a few prevent you from enjoying the meetup and making new friends !!
Tips for a meetup success :
Purchase or make a re-usable name tag and wear it to all the events so people can identify you. Wal-Mart sells individual plastic buttons (less than $4 for largest one) that allow you to print something out (name and maybe Sheltie's names) and you pop the back off and insert the info, and pop back together. As an additional option, t-shirts and buttons with a past meetup logo can be purchased here : http://www.cafepress.....
Use the message board to chat with owners before attending a meetup, get to know them a bit before taking that first big step to attending a meetup
Use the RSVP tool in the EVENTS section, even if someone posts YES that they can come ? they can change it back to NO up until the day of the event if something comes up.
Be courteous - bring poop bags to clean up after your pooch no matter where the event. Don?t bring a sick or un-socialized/aggressive dog to an event and put other pets at risk of disease or injury.
Be prepared - we usually recommend bringing some bottled water and even a small first aid kit. For most community events, they require the dog be leashed and have a current rabies tag (esp in Duval).
Be involved !!! Organizers try and get events set up, but participation and success is totally MEMBER driven. So jump in and make it work for you, even if it is planning mini-meetups more than once a month with members that live closer to you.
