We take philosophy to be the art of pursuing wisdom through reading, discussion and thought without resorting to popular trends, blind faith, uninformed emotionalism, traditional authority, or rigid preconceived notions. We will discuss the great ideas of history, the contemporary issues that may concern us and the great minds who have contributed to our understanding of our humanity and our place in Nature. People of all belief systems are welcome but those who are religiously conservative or politically strident in their thinking should probably look elsewhere. We believe Humanism to be the great intellectual tradition of Western Civilization and broadly define it as open-mindedness, a spirit of inquiry that refuses to be restrained by church or state, an appreciation of the arts and sciences, a concern for human welfare, and a love of discussion, debate and knowledge. That said, we are not scholars, and we hope to enjoy ourselves in a relaxed setting in the company of bright people with similar interests.
