PhotoShop for Beginners - postponed

  • Feb 1, 2014 · 6:00 PM

I was hoping to sign a lease no later than this week for the beginning of my new school. Unfortunately, this still has not happened. I will be going to the Chop House following the Let me Count the Ways challenge and would love to speak to whoever happens to be at the shoot or downtown.

I do apologize for the delays; however, once we get the classes set up and running smoothly, it hopefully will be worthy the wait.

Thanks for your patience.

-----------------------

I am breaking rule #1 here and using the site for personal, commercial reasons. This is not a set-in stone meet up but I want to gauge a level of interest. I am considering putting on a 3 month PhotoShop for beginners course. It would be a combination of online learning with a face to face meeting every two weeks and a live online Q&A at least once a week. Each student will get personal and individualized instruction as we move throughout the program.

Anticipated areas of coverage would be:
Levels
Curves
Selections
Layers
Blending modes
Color Adjustments
Workflow
Prepping for print
Dealing and Cloning
Channels
Paths
and more.

Would you be interested? Would you be willing to pay for a course like this? And are there other areas that should be covered in an Intro to PhotoShop course for photographers?

Not sure that it actually happened. Was not notified of its location, so I scheduled myself to work. No biggie, just let me know when and where.

Hey all and no you are not missing anything. I had hoped to have an office space and classroom facilities well before now; however, there have been a few delays in getting the lease signed and everything moving forward. I will have the online classroom up next week but the actual classroom/lecture facility is in limbo. I will contact all as soon as things are concrete.

I am still interested but for the life of me I can't seem to find where it will be held and at what time. Am I missing something in the emails?!???

Do we have a location yet? It's only a couple of days away. ???

I am interested for myself and my daughter who is an art student wanting to transition to computer art and photography. Would depend on time and location though.

I am definitely interested in these classes. I don't have any suggestions for additional subjects to cover, the ones listed look great to me. As far as a fee I would like to see it at around $50 to $60 for the entire three months but I'm sure they're worth far more than that. The Polk Museum has offered a similar class for over twice that price.

I keep hearing that Lightroom is the way to go vs photoshop. However I know nothing about Lightroom and I've found photoshop confusing with all the layering and saving

Keith, Lightroom is a different beast. Photoshop is a heavy-duty photo editor and pixel manipulator, with some graphic design tools and a very little bit of organizational tools thrown in if you count Bridge. It's good for doing a very thorough edit of a single photo or design.

I use both. All my photos are in my Lightroom catalog for organization, and the vast majority of my photo edits (95-98%) are done solely in Lightroom's Develop module. If I need to do a more extensive portrait edit, or merge photos to a panorama, or do any graphic design, then I turn to Photoshop.

Lightroom is half organizer and half editor. It's a digital asset manager, helping you to catalogue and organize all your photos, including built-in publishing to online sharing such as Facebook, Flickr, Smugmug, etc. It also does development-style editing: exposure, white balance, crop/rotate, ISO noise, sharpening, all the other basic tools you need for most every photo. Easily apply corrections to many photos at once, then fine-tune the ones that need more help. While it does include some local editing tools (e.g. a rudimentary adjustment brush & a spot healing tool), it doesn't let you perform as "deep" an edit as Photoshop.

I've taken a couple of Photoshop classes/workshops, but I didn't have Photoshop at the time. Now, I have Photoshop and would LOVE to get a refresher! I would be willing to pay, but not a lot.

I am very interested in a photoshop class. I have both a lap top and photo shop elements 12. I am a major beginner in this area and can't wait to get started in learning this program.

Where are you holding this class?

I'm very interested . . . however, I do not do well with online learning. My brother and I were just talking about this the other day. What we want to learn is PhotoShop Elements. However, we were thinking of about 1 hour, face to face, each week with a computer provided (I don't own a laptop . . . I have an iMac 27" that is about 6 months old). We were thinking along the lines of learning a particular process at the one hour class . . . with the entire week to practice that step . . . followed the next week, and so on learning to learn how to use the software. Until now, I have used iPhoto (for several years). It has served me well. But, I have too many photos in my library for iPhoto and am currently trying to switch to Aperture. As a matter of fact, I have a One to One class scheduled this afternoon at the Apple Store in Brandon.

Hello Greg, I am very interested in the course. I thought there was a Jan. 8th meeting for this. Am I too late that one? I guess there is no location yet. let me know. thanks.

  • Judie T.

Hi Greg, I take it the January 3 date is a no-go? As I said, I only know a miniscule amount of Photoshop Elements so I am not sure your class would meet my needs as I am such a newbie. Have you come up with a place and time? Happy New Year to all! Judie Tuttle

Greg, Like I said I want to attend, but the first day is the Tampa Bay Hero Ride supporting Disabled Vets and I have to be there. Save me a seat? Or if I can help I can move around to those having trouble.

I'd be very interested. I have Lightroom, but would love to learn PS, and hopefully Lightroom. I've been struggling to learn LR, as I'm teaching my self by YouTube tutorials.

I would be interested in this class depending on cost. I have PS element 8. I have bren looking for classes for some time now.

Usually when I teach, I teach I try to teach "raster-based imaged editing", which are image adjustments that work in PhotoShop. Elements, LightRoom, Aperture, or any other pixel-based image editing program. As comments and interest come in, I'll look into whether Elements and Lightroom can be taught at the same time, or if we need to try and develop courses exclusively for those programs.

    November 25, 2013

    • Nathan C.

Greg, I can teach or help teach a simple Lightroom class. An hour on the Library module, an hour on the Develop module, then maybe another 30-60 on exporting, miscellaneous questions, etc.

I use Lightroom but have only had limited exposure to Elements, although I do have the software. I was considering getting the $9.99/month special for Photoshop & Lightroom. Do you think that's a good deal?

Is PS Creative Cloud the same set of features as PS, as far as you know?

Photoshop Creative Cloud has more features (small features but they are different) than the PS CS6, also updates happen to CC a bit sooner than a standard PSCS6 license.

I am very interested; that said, the extent of the knowledge I am looking for at this time is Photoshop Elements. I do not have the full program. I would be more than willing to pay for learning Elements. I have Elements 11; I have the training CD. I have as many ? about the working of the screen (if you will) as I do the actual working of the tool. Thank you for even considering offering this! Judie Tuttle I have a laptop. I wonder if the library would help this meeting?

    2 · November 24, 2013

    • Greg W.

Hi Judy. I am looking into the practicality of offering either both PhotoShop and PS elements simultaneously or running a class for each. It looks like interest is split about equally I just need to se how the content matches up and the material that is available.

      November 26, 2013

  • Neal "Corky" K.

Yes Photoshop, and Illustrator would be nice too.

Great idea! I have been searching online for a college or community college that offers PhotoShop Elements....haven't had a lick of luck! :(. I live in a mobile home park where if we can set a date and time I could see about getting the club house available??? If you are interested.
So please count me in as very interested!

I took a photoshop class at the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts two years ago. It was a fabulous class and definitely for beginners, but I did not use it after that so I can't remember anything. :-(

      November 24, 2013

We had students using Elements and the full-blown Photoshop and it was fine. The instructor just explained the commands for each.

I know for all of us it depends a lot on day and location. Once I get a feel for how much interest there is and where that interest is coming from, then we cam nail down the date and location.

I wonder if there is space somewhere in Lakeside Village? :-)

      November 24, 2013

I would love to attend the classes. I've been looking for a beginners class in this area for some time now. Looking forward to more details.

Hi Greg, thanks for offering classes. Unfortunately I would not be interested in beginners classes since I am beyond the 'beginner' stage with photoshop. But if you offer continuous classes with advanced features I would be interested.

    November 23, 2013

    • Greg W.

If beginner's PS works out, I hope to do a series of Advanced Photoshop, Lightroom, and even photography courses. I am just at this point looking for a level of interest and depending on that level I can hopefully figure out how best to put this all together.\
