Clarification of Web Technology and its uses

Web Technology(ies):

HTML - helps you present your Web pages. You will write code or use an authoring tool to design the layout of your information: text, graphics, video and forms. This language (script) gives your content a framework to hang things. Things are text, graphics, video and forms. You can hand-code, or use an authoring tool (Dreamweaver, HTML-kit, Zend products, Framework, GIMP, etc)

CSS - helps you style your presentation of your Web pages, structure your layouts, colours, and texts. Like art, CSS is an artistic issue, not all understands the issues involved.

PHP - this does not help you present your Web pages. It helps you process the data captured from the user session. This data could either be returned and displayed on another webpage or written to a database - table. This technology is free and available as an open source web technology. Open means open to all users of the language(script).

MySQL - this is a storage system for storing data. Data of numeric, date, text, etc. This technology is free. This technology is free and available as an open source web technology. Open means open to all users of the storage system.

CMS - content management solutions - Prebuilt two-way websites by open source community. Free to download, install, configure your content within its predefined information structure or pages. Most reputable Web Hosting space agents will install this for you. You do not need Dreamweaver for this to maintain the pages. You could use Microsoft word processing package to edit the HTML code the hard way, or use Dreamweaver to alter and adaptable the pages to your needs. You will need a FTP - File Transfer Program to transfer your updated pages to your host agent's web space. FTP can be purchased or a free version is available. Installing CMS is an acquired skill, not for the faint hearted or lay user or uninitiated computer user.

Here are a few named CMS - websites: (these are prestyled, predetermined, prestructured completed stand alone websites, you can then adapted to your requirements)

Joomla - Usually suitable for conveying information one way.
Drupral - Usually suitable for conveying information two way with out a payment gateway. Some have adapted it to shopping catalogs.
PHPbb3 - Usually suitable for providing customer with a platform to give you a feedback on your products and services.
WordPress - This is suited for blogging
Moodle - Usually suitable for Course Management Content system. eLearning portal. Maintains, assessments, attendance, and reporting from single admin control panel.

Dreamweaver C6.0 Supports editing CMS pages of Drupal, Wordpress and Joomla. Awesome feature, in the past you have to search for all related pages (html, css, php, etc). Now, with a click all related files are listed and can also be selectively filtered. This includes code hinting should you wish to embed code.

Mixing Website technologies:
You can have your Website built and bolted onto it is a CMS website as a link to the CMS.

Commercial Grade Websites will include the following: (for example
Website with product and services information
Correspondence and contact web pages
Booking for services or Invoicing for services or Payment services gateways to Credit & Debit card services, Paypal etc panel
Product and Pricing catalogue maintanence admin panel
Customer feedback
Mobile phone app enabled websites.
Despatch and Delivery Tracking
Quote and Discounting engines
Web Analytics - Profiling your web pages to give you the best parked pages and landing pages. Identify user habits and gain commercial edge for future developments.
User usage logs - Identify where your usage come from
Aggregators - Resellers buying into your products and services you pay commission per lead.
Lead Generators - This could be integrated into your website in several ways.
Emailing Marketing - Milk your mailing list to your trading pattern. Market your products & Services when you need extra sales & revenue.

Browsers - Window to your Web site, there are several popular browsers; Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Mozilla, etc

One way website - Web pages providing information only. Any school kid frm year 10 onwards can put together a website. So it is not rocket science! Just organised and process orientated techniques for putting together a website. You can also create websites using Microsoft Powerpoint!

Two way website - Web pages that provide user interaction to exchange and process data to provide new information. Data is not information until it is processed and structure into information.

Two way website - Web pages that could include: - Order forms, Games, Visual interactive objects, and Payment gateways - VISA, Paypal, Worldpay, and any other foreign payment schemes.

Web Phone Applications - are two way and interactive Phone devices (smartphones) enabled applications.
Web Tablets Applications - are two way and interactive Table devices (Apple Ipad) enabled applications.
Web Personal Computer Applications - are two way and interactive PC devices (workstations) enabled applications.
Web SmartTV Applications - are two way and interactive TV devices (Smart digital TV) enable applications.

Dreamweaver is owned by Adobe. Dreamweaver is an IDE - integrated development environment tool. This tool will help you, when use in the correct way to integrate several web technologies. Dreamweaver is a quick and easy way to learn, adapt and advance your Web building ideas. Dreamweaver is zero coding and zero programming It is flexible if you wish to code or program. To code or program you will require formal training. It is not self-explanatory and not intuitive. Dreamweaver is not a free tool. You can Rent or Buy Dreamweaver from Adobe

Web Technology Personnel - This industry never had a job title. Web Designers are Graphics graduate students extending their art theory knowledge and artistic skills into the Web medium. Many do not process the technical skills required to design from flowcharts, processes, algorithm, end user requirement and business requirements. They cannot code but can patch up existing scripts with snippets of code.

Web Developers are not web designers, very few could do the whole. Most are maintenance developers, usually not qualified to a standard, like ZEND certification. They might have a degree in computing but maybe no commercial experiences except academic assignments.

Front End Developers of Websites - You often hear people call themselves front-end developers, this means they only deal with the visual of the webpages, they do not handle data, they are only concern with the text, graphics, layout and presentation of the webpages. They deal with the web interface with the human user, end user. Most use some kind of authoring tool. For example, Adobe Dreamweaver, Front Page, Go-Live (retired), etc.

Back End Developers of Websites - You often hear them talking about code, code in HTML, code in CSS, code in PHP, code in Javascript, Databases and Table relationships, etc. This is an acquired skill. It is structured English and instructional to the computers.

Adobe Dreamweaver, is your tool to assist you with the use and development of your website by integrating all the above web technologies with little or no knowledge of technicalities of the technology. You do not need in-depth knowledge to apply your interpretation of its uses. It helps if you do have in depth knowledge of the respective web technologies, you could almost then predetermine what solution works best for certain type of web applications.

Spry Framework for Ajax
Note: The Spry features in Dreamweaver CS4 use the latest Spry version: 1.6.1.

The Spry framework for Ajax is a JavaScript library that provides easy-to-use yet powerful Ajax functionality that allows designers to build pages that provide a richer experience for their users. It is designed to take the complexity out of Ajax and allow designers to easily create Web 2.0 pages.

The Spry framework is a way to incorporate XML, JSON or HTML data into pages using HTML, CSS, and a minimal amount of JavaScript, without the need for refreshing the entire page. Spry also provides easy to build and style widgets, providing advanced page elements for end users. The Spry framework is HTML-centric, and easy to implement for users with basic knowledge of HTML, CSS and JavaScript. The framework was designed such that the markup is simple and the JavaScript is minimal. The Spry framework can be used by anyone who is authoring for the web in their tool of choice.

PHP Smarty Template Programming - This is coding performed by Web Programmers, it is separate from Web Designer's remit. Here you will use Smarty templates to bring together content (business logic & data logic) and presentation together. Web Designers can then concentrate on presentation (HTML, CSS, etc) and Web Programmer (PHP scripting) can concentration on content.
