Can we make a living from kids' apps?

  • March 20, 2013 · 6:00 PM

A special meetup, curated by Chris O'Shea from Cowly Owl, and chaired by Stuart Dredge from the Guardian, in which we'll look at some examples of kids apps (both educational and non-educational) and whether it's possible to make a viable living from them. Experienced practitioners will be giving tips about what works and what doesn't, and you'll have a chance to quiz them during a panel discussion and networking break.

Confirmed speakers are:

Chris O'Shea, Cowly Owl

James Huggins, Made in Me

My main confusion right now is which ad network to use - is there anything out there which offers CPM ads (some of them like InMobi says so but never show such ads once integrated) - I am using InMobi, Admob, Jumptap and Smaato and am having a bad eCPM rate for now as I dont think kids will click the ads and I dont want to place it in positions where it disturbs the game play.
What are your experiences on the same?

Hi Rajat, try posting this on the discussion forum, rather than here, and I'll see if I can find someone who might be able to answer.

It looks like this was a particularly useful and interesting meetup. I'm annoyed that I didn't find this forum until several weeks too late to attend it! I don't supposes it was videoed was it?

Have App devs considered implementing a service like Chartboost in their Apps, and then using this as a channel to cross-promote each other?

    March 21, 2013

    • James K.

Those sorts of services generally can't be implemented if you're targeting the app at kids, as they collect user information. I think it'd be a good idea to develop a simpler more informal version though, with developers grouping together and cross-promoting apps from each other. I'd want to make sure the apps I was promoting would be suitable for my customers though.

Great meet up, was nice to actually have a chat with some other app developers doing similar things!

Thanks a lot for organising the event Chris, and these links are really useful. I also came across Appstore rankings, which amazingly lets you find out app keywords - I don't know how they've done it! I ran out of time, and forgot to mention I'd made the app I showed free yesterday (Frosby Learning Games 2).
