Hanger left, then Hanger right: from Petersfield to Alton

  • Jun 1, 2013 · 8:30 AM
  • Waterloo Station, near main ticket office opposite plat 17

A hangar is a closed structure to hold aircraft or spacecraft in protective storage, and is a French derivation of uncertain provenance. A hanger, on the other hand, comes from the good Old English hangra, and is a steep, wooded slope. Spelling matters, folks: those who like to hang around hangars in their spare time will be sorely disappointed on our next walk; hanger hangers-on will however be richly rewarded.

A photograph of a distant hanger is nearby for those still in any doubt. As far as other details are concerned, this walk will lead 15 miles (23 km) from Petersfield in Hampshire to Alton, also in Hampshire, along the footpath known as the Hangers Way. I shan't reveal why it is so called, but if you were to expect some steeply wooded slopes on the way you wouldn't be disappointed. Apart from that, this is bucolic England at its best: streams, dingly dells, the odd sunken lane and pubs. Plenty of good pubs, including as always a lovely one for lunch. All in all, a marvellous choice for our next outing. Which is why I have chosen it. See you there!

Administrative note: as ever I will get group tickets for the train once we are all meekly assembled at Waterloo.

A perfect day out with lovely company. Dankeschoen, Rich. I am out again, the weekend is just too nice to stay inside. I will upload my pics when I am home tonight.

Would love to come on another one of your walks Rich but you've lost someone else to France. I moved to Paris a month ago!

    Happy walking!

Alas, alak, I'm expected to drink copious amounts of alcohol in the environs of Stokey instead. And I can't disappoint that sort of expectation... I would do both, but I fear that that way madness lies... next time, for sure!
