Inspired by New York’s sophisticated Asellina restaurant, Cucina Asellina has been designed by architects Foster & Partners to a stunning effect. Inviting and elegant, the food is genuinely Italian but executed with New York flair. Luisa Welch, member of the group has organised another of her excellent Italian food and wine matching dinners and the theme this time is Sardinia. The island produces some excellent wines, which bear little resemblance to those of mainland Italy, in fact, the style is almost French, although the grapes are indigenous. Cannonau (a clone of Grenache), Carignan and Cabernet Sauvignon reign supreme here, as well as the Corsican-style Vermentino for the whites.
The menu for this event has been created by Sardinian chef Michele Pais, who is as passionate about the food of his land as he is about the wines. Expect Saffron & shellfish fregola, fresh basil and datterini tomatoes, Roast suckling pig, rosemary potatoes and myrtle sauce, and Pardulas, the typical ricotta, saffron and orange tart. Dietary requirements can be catered for so please let me know if you have any when booking.
At the time of writing, the wines have not yet been finalized, but they will include some of the gorgeous wines from Santadi, one of the most prestigious Sardinian wineries since the 1950’s, whose wines continually come up top in the French Revue des Vins and every year win the ‘due or tre bicchieri’ from the Italian Gambero Rosso, and score over 90/100 from the American Wine Enthusiast.
This event is very keenly priced at just £57 to include service and VAT, wine commentary by Luisa and great company. The reception will start at 7 pm, sitting down at 7.30. I have reserved 10 places for the group.
P.S. The restaurant is part of the new ME Hotel, but has its own entrance on the Strand oppsite the Waldorf Hotel. The Radio Bar on the top floor has stunning views over London and you may like to have a drink there before dinner.
