Long Weekend Wine Tour to Rioja 19th-22nd April 2013

Rioja is one of the most famous wine regions in the world and has been seducing wine lovers for centuries with its delicious, silky wines. Tucked away in the North-East corner of Spain on the edge of the Basque country this fascinating region is a treasure trove for fine wines, gourmet food, and charming towns.

During this long weekend trip we will be staying in a delightful 4 star hotel in the bustling town of Logrono for 3 nights, and during our 4 days will be visiting a variety of wineries to discover the range of styles that the region can offer. Our shortlist of bodegas includes: Campo Viejo, C.V.N.E., Dinastía Vivanco, Faustino, Finca Allende, Lopez de Heredia, Marqués de Riscal, Muga, La Rioja Alta, Palacio, Roda and Ysios.

The tour has been timed to take full advantage of the only direct flights from the UK to Bilbao, the nearest airport to Rioja. A coach will be waiting for us at Bilbao airport to meet Easyjet flight 3223 which departs London Stanstead on 19th April at 10.10 and arrives at Bilbao at 13.10. The return flight 3228 on 22nd April departs Bilbao 21.50 arriving back into Stanstead at 22.40. You will need to book your own flights.

The tour includes:-

Travel by executive coach in the Rioja region including pick-up from and return to Bilbao airport

3 nights accommodation with buffet breakfast at the 4-star Hotel NH Herencia Rioja in the centre of Logrono, just 5 minutes walk to the pedestrianised old town which is full of restaurants and bars, see: http://www.nh-hotels.com/nh/en/hotels/spain/logrono/nh-herencia-rioja.html

7 winery visits/wine tastings

4 lunches with wine

The services of a Spanish wine specialist

The services of a Spanish-speaking tour guide

The cost is £650 based on sharing a room with a single supplement of £125. Flights are NOT included.

A note about meals in Spain: people eat LATE! After a leisurely breakfast each morning, we will have a late lunch around 2 pm at a winery which is included in the programme. Generally restaurants do not even open before 9pm for dinner so we have left the evenings free for you to explore the many restaurants and bars of Logrono (or not if you don’t want to eat late). The hotel also has its own restaurant but this also does not open until 9pm.

You may like to extend your trip and stay in Bilbao to see the Guggenheim museum and other sites. If you stay on after the end of the tour the coach may be able to drop you in the centre of Bilbao after it has taken the group to the airport. If you arrive in Bilbao before the tour begins you will need to make your own way to the airport in time to meet Easyjet flight 3223 on 19th April.

If you would like to join this tour RSVP on the Meetup site and send an email to Christos at [masked] to request a booking form.

Here are more details of the itinerary (winery visits to be confirmed) which you can also see on the Wine Voyages website: http://winevoyages.co.uk/wine-tours-rioja.htm

Friday 19th April 2013

Assemble at Bilbao Airport for a 14h.00 departure by executive coach for the Rioja region. With a stop for lunch (cost included), the journey will take us through the mountains of the Sierra Cantabria and down the valley of the river Ebro to the town of Haro. Our first visit of the tour will be to one of the top bodegas in the town, where our hosts will take us on a tour of their winery and introduce us to the wines of the region. We will then continue southwards to Logroño, where we will check in to the 4-star hotel, which will be our base for the next three nights.

Your evening will be free. Why not join the locals in the tapas bars in the narrow streets of the old town, just five minutes walk from the hotel?

Saturday 20th April 2013

After a leisurely breakfast, we will board our coach for the short jouney to the town of Laguardia in the heart of the Rioja Alavesa district for a morning visit. Lunch will be provided at the bodega or a nearby restaurant (cost included). We will then visit a second bodega before returning to Logroño at the end of the afternoon.

Your evening will be free. Another night in the tapas bars or something more sedate? There are a number of good restaurants within walking distance of the hotel.

Sunday 21st April 2013

Today we will visit two bodegas in the vicinity of Logroño. Lunch will be provided (cost included). Your evening will again be free.

Monday 22nd April 2013

After checking out of our hotel, we will head northwards towards the lovely town of Haro for a morning visit. We will have lunch at the bodega or a nearby restaurant (cost included). A final visit will follow.

Our coach will then take us north to Bilbao and the airport, where the tour will end.
