Fly-In

Join the group for a fun time of flying and possible competition. If anyone has an idea of a competitive event we can have, please submit it for consideration by the group. Everyone is welcome, if you don't have you're own aircraft yet, please still join us... it's lots of fun to see all of the various aircraft and to watch them fly.

I'm going to CSDH to fly RC airplane and multirotor tomorrow, Sat at around 9:00am. Join me if you can.
If you need help with your multirotor or airplane maybe I can help you out. I'm not an expert, but I'll do what I can.

Hmmm, trying to get your own little fly-in going, great idea... Post pictures and names of who shows up..

Its just a few local fellow RC flyers that like to fly. CSDH is just one of the spots that we like to fly from. Usually on Sat or Sun mornings or evenings, someone is flying RC there. Anybody is welcome to join us. I don't fly that often, so I post when I do go there. Its always more fun to have more rc modelers flying together. Learn a lot from each other.

so, is there anyone who could help me with my NAZA M system? I can go to your place. thanks mike

Mike, I use a Naza M V1 on my scratch built quad. I didn't run any major problems with mine. But there are many posts of people having problems out-of-the-box with the Naza M. There may be some differences between some of the modules. The software or IMU does not appear to be robust. Btw, a lot of unusual problems kinda disappear after you give it a reboot, long warmup (>3 minutes) and compass recalibration at the flying site.

Had a great time meeting everyone. I also learned a lot in getting all this equipment up and operating all at the same time with a lot of help from you guys. Look forward to getting together again.

@Steve, I had the same thought.

Maybe someone should build and bring a frequency board where a pilot can checkout his copter's frequency and channel number. Back in the old days, you 'checked in/out' a clothes pin with your RC channel number before you can fly. We learn or encounter new 'things/situations' every meet! Yeah, maybe we need to start thinking about some simple flight safety guidelines, for example: no flying over people or pit area, etc

I put together a quick and dirty aerial video of today's fly-in. Nothing fancy, just an aerial view of the site and quads zipping by at decent speed. It's at:

thanks for the video, I wish I could've made it.

Great video Tom! I'll bring more tarp next time. Since there were so many copters flying, i didn't have a chance to try out my quad with a homebuilt servo driven gimbal. I'll try it out sometime during the week. After studying the your aerial geography of field, it gave me some ideas. It was pretty 'thermally' that day. When I was flying my light weight fixed wing trainer, I was climbing pretty fast and sustaining flight without motor propulsion. Humm, maybe later on I'll build a combined VTOL fixed wing trainer and tricopter. This will take advantage of mother nature propulsion.

Each Fly-In I see new stuff people are coming up with. This is really great! There are so many variations and gadgetry. Lots of creativity! It was great fun for me! I am so glad I discovered this meetup group!

Couldn't ask for a better time to fly my bumblebee 550. Met some interesting people, got an hour of flight time under my belt, and managed not to have any high velocity close encounters with stationary objects. Outstanding day all together!

Hey Mike Rivard, perhaps driving directions would be better. When I click on your map link it shows a gas station at Carson and Moneta ave, and I don't think that's it

Go to google earth or google map and enter: 33°51'41.13"N, 118°15'6.39"W in the 'Search' box. It will take to the field. Then select the 'Direction' box and enter your home address.

    • Bob O.

Btw, just do a copy of the above coordinates and paste it into the google earth or map 'search' box.

Unlike our last Fly-In at CSDH where we flew from the parking lot, we normally fly from the center of the dirt lot where there's lots of room and no light poles to crash into...perfect for FPV training or general flying of copters or fixed wing aircraft. If there is no construction activity in the dirt field, I suggest we fly there. We usually unload our models and gear in the dirt field and then park our cars in the parking lot. We do this to avoid accidents with the cars. It is dusty, so I usually bring a tarp to land and take off from. It is usually bright and hot, so bring some shade and cool drinks. I will bring some trainer fixed wing planes, so if anyone is interested in flying fixed wing, see me. Hopefully the weather, wind and construction gods will be nice to us Sat Aug 3. I went out there yesterday and it look like they leveled out the dirt mounds, so far so good! I'm planning on flying RC there this coming Sat (7/20) morning. Drop by if you can!
