December Fly-In Meetup

It's been a couple of months since we've had a Fly-In so let's get together at Cal State Dominguez Hills and take to the skies.  Bring a tarp or ground covering as the field is mostly dirt.  Wide open flying for FPV and line of sight.

We're still looking for an alternative location so if you have one please let us know.

This multirotor meetup group is really active: http://www.meetup.com/LA-Drones-Multirotors-Learn-Build-Program-and-Fly/
They have almost weekly build secessions with a lot of people (regulars and new) showing up for building quads or the open lab BS secessions later in the day. Several weeks ago they had a Fly-In at Friendship Park in San Pedro. Was fun! They are planning more fly-In meetups and maybe some at night if there is interest. btw, CSDH is OK to fly (a couple of us were there yesterday) as long as there are no more than 5 fliers. They just don't like big groups. I'll be meeting with EAA at Compton airport this weekend, I'll inquire if they can help us with fly-In meetups.

    Dont give up!!!

We can have a fly-in at Whittier Narrows anytime. All you need is current AMA. we can fly dawn to dusk, even a little after dusk.

    7 days-a-week.

Maybe its just dead during the winter, Xmas, that kind if thing.

    February 11, 2014

  • Wayne H.

So it looks like the group is dead as far as activities go. The calendar has nothing this month and there was nothing last month.

Too bad as I really enjoyed the few times I got together with the folks at the fly-ins and swap-meets.

Maybe a monthly gathering someplace to sit, share and chat is something that could work.

Fly-ins seem to be a big issue because of the attention a larger group attracts.

I think the issue is location. I know of other groups that are flying but they are driving one to two hours to a remote location.

Like it or not, they are the only advocates we have. Plus, they arw not stupid! They khow the fpv, multicopter RCers are the fastest growing sector of the RC community. They need members, so they need us. This is an opportunity.

    WISE UP!!

Guys, let's calm it down a little, this is not some anonymous forum. We all know each other and should be civil to each other even if you dont agree with something. Ok?

They expo is this weekend at the Ontario Convention center. A good time inquire about starting a club.

    January 8, 2014

    • Wayne H.

What kind of an expo, like the one that was in Long Beach a few months ago? If so that was mostly cars, trucks not a lot of flying stuff.

      January 8, 2014

    • Wayne H.

Oh I see AMA, looked at vendors, nothing going on there, really no big vendors, says something about the venue!

      January 9, 2014

  • Wayne H.

I personally want nothing to do with AMA. All they do is collect lots of money and provide nothing in return. Ask their representative how much their insurance pays out in any given year, near 0, as they position themselves secondary after any other insurance you may have. We have enough as RC folks to deal with with the FAA and their "policies". They have no right legally to enforce any of their un-legislated policies, and yet the try. I'll just find my own spots to fly and keep it solo. Maybe what we need is an informal group that meets once a month to exchange ideas, but does no group fly-ins thus keeping the profile very low.

I always enjoy our meetups, its great to talk and fly with fellow hobbyists! Seems most other people take a 'neutral' or negative view" Yeah, whatever!
I kinda expected that sooner or later there will be 'complications' with us flying there. It's been going on. I've been told by local park rangers that RC aircraft are no longer allowed in parks. Local schools have also barred RC aircraft as well. I recently lost my favorite RC glider flying spot (public land) up in Rancho PV that I've used occasionally for the last 35 years. Nowadays, public administrators pretty much have a negative view of RCers.

    December 18, 2013

    • Wayne H.

Bob, what may seem on the surface negative is my case being pro-active. I was in the business world my entire career reaching executive manage level. I can tell you form experience when dealing with government bureaucrats the worst thing you can do is appear weak. I many cases if you insist on seeing written policy or guideline they won't be able to produce one. Therefore any argument they have presented becomes moot. HAs anyone spoken directly with the College President? I have experienced you can't do that while out shooting photography, in a public place, generally if you tell them to go away they will. Just saying. All this being said it up to the group if they want to pursue the issue anymore. For me it's a drive from Huntington Beach, and I really only go for the conversation.

      January 8, 2014

  • Bob O.

Seems unlikely that we'll be able to have group fly-ins at CSDH anymore. From what I've heard so far, besides the usual liability disclaimers, insurance, etc the administrators also want 'fees' for lot usage, so that's not gonna happen. There is an already established 'fee' ($5.00) RC flying field in San Pedro if we still want to have a local fly-in. Otherwise for a non-fee fly-in it will have to be at a big wide open public area. The closest and most interesting place to fly from is Malibu or along the beaches. Any other ideas or comments?

@Wayne, that would totally depends upon the park officials and what day the event was held. Your guess is as good as mind. However, I have spoken to a number of park officials because I have flown at many.

      January 8, 2014

  • Wayne H.

So what has changed, the CSDH President has no say? For crying out loud, its a damn patch of dirt, that is paid for with California TAX PAYERS $ I might add.

It never fails to amaze me how these bureaucrats go on these power trips, at the expense of the TAX PAYERS.

Did anyone mention a hold harmless agreement, seems to me if every fly is willing to sign one, then the Colleges exposure is nil. So we need to find a big wide-open public space, isn't that where we have been flying, given it's publicly funded?

Got to get out of California, it's just too much hassle to live here anymore. HD

One of the quads who flew before 9:00 had especially quiet props. He flew from the left pad as you faced the field. Not a lot to go on but if this sounds familiar I forgot to ask what they were. Clues to who or what appreciated.

Sounds good, I can meet someone at your office or Ozzie can bring them on Saturday. Sorry you're not an exhibitor.

      January 7, 2014

Yes on the QAV. You looked a bit older than your picture. I have a DJI 550 hex and am looking for something quieter than the stock props. Are you happy with their performance and where did you get them.

    December 26, 2013

    • Wayne H.

Franco, don't those props have a little turn-up at the tips. Yes I remember commenting on how quiet they were as well. My APC MR props create more noise for sure.

I'd like to change that to a positive attitude somehow. Currently I volunteer at Compton High School as a techy consultant. I'm guiding students to make RC stuff, like a quadcopter , airplane and flying car. The students get real world techy knowledge and skills...not just test taking. So far the Compton HC administrators have a very positive attitude. Maybe its just volunteers helping one school at a time...eventually we may get some good press.
I myself have not talked to the CSDH administrators. There were some guys (sorry, I can't remember who) that said that they would talk to the CSDH administrators. Hopefully, a win-win document or arrangement(s) can be negotiated that will allow us to continue our fly-Ins at the vacant lot.
If I don't hear of any progress in the next month or so, I'll talk to the administrators myself.

Well, I finally crashed, bigtime. I need some help trying to figure out what happened.

Here, I'm filming some trapeze artists, watching the craft, and the power suddenly cuts out and the craft drops to the ground. I can't really figure out why at this point.

I put the facts of this accident on FPV lab and the Youtube description - here's the links. If anyone has any ideas what happened, I would sure appreciate it. Here, no one got hurt, relatively minor damage to the craft, but if I was flying over people, over the open ocean, over inaccessible terrain, well, I want to do everything I can to make sure this doesn't happen again.

Just received this link from a friend and thought I'd share it with the membership of our group. This is a short article and video of a new algorithm that will allow a quadcopter to continue flying even if it loses 3 props or motors. Pretty cool stuff! Don't know if the link will click through or if you'll need to copy and paste.

I wanted to post this short clip of a totally FPV flight low and slow through the trees, behind hills and ravines, snoopin' around with the TBS Discovery frame, experimenting with the blast through properties of the 1.2 Ghz video system with cloverleaf antennas. This is primarily for people newer to the sport that may be deciding on equipment to get, direction to go, etc, not that I'm any expert, but it shows some of the possibilities. Please post comments and questions as I'm still learning, too.

I usually go fly at the Woodley RC Park in Van Nuys. Although sometimes the attitude Multirotors get there is a bit abrasive. If I'm flying my Phantom, I just keep it smart and safe and fly wherever I won't be bothering people. If I'm flying my Tarot T960 hexa, I keep that to the RC Park for now.

The park here at Cherry and 45th has a nice big field and shade trees around the edge. It is busy during baseball season and would need to check with Parks and Rec for availability. They also have a community activity center that can be used along with restrooms.

    September 27, 2013

    • Bob O.

The park looks great, however it is surrounded by homes and next to a busy street. And, like most LA parks, they are very busy during the weekend. If someone that is a resident of Long Beach can find out the schedule of the park, maybe they can get us a fly-in meet-up date. Oh yeah, I heard there's a general notice that no RC is allowed in any LA park. Someone needs to look into that too. I know for sure Torrance and PV park rangers have been kicking out RCers.

Thought I would post this Disaster Scenario, or 'When Quads and Cell Phone Towers Tangle'

I was filming over a water tank about 1,500 feet distant when suddenly I completely lose my video signal. I freaked, went into fail safe, nursed it back to me, but I still don't really know what's going on. Later on I saw the video and there was a cell phone tower right there that I never really picked up on in the FPV camera. But the video never really came back properly.

Anyway, here's the short edited clip - if anyone has any ideas, they would be appreciated:

For now, I'm going to propose that we have a regular fly-in meetup at CSDH the 3rd Saturday morning (8:00am) of each month. For Sept it will be on the 21st. The fly-in will also be a 'general help or flight instruction' for any any type of craft. Any type of drone, multicopter, fixed wing, robots of any type or regular RC is invited. More the better, we can learn and teach each other! Its gonna be fun!
Btw, on the last fly-in a pilot almost lost his copter probably due to another FPVer on the same freq & Cha. What I suggest is an informal honor system where everybody flying FPV brings a 'large sign' with his Frequency, channel, his (her) name and model type on it. Post the sign near where they are flying from so that other FPVer can look to see if they are on the same channel before they turn on their FPV system. Hopefully this will help. If you forget to bring a sign, I'll bring some paper, scotch tape and a felt marker so that you can write one up and post on the spot.

    August 31, 2013

  • Bob O.

I'll be out of town this weekend, so I won't be able to join you Rob. Still would like to have another large fly-in meetup sometime in Sept or Oct, i always learn a lot at these meetups. Please anyone, if you have any suggestions for a time /date fly-in meetup, feel free to post. Since I'm retired, I can pretty much meetup almost anytime or date with some advanced notice. Btw, evening fly-ins are fun too, the LED illuminated copters look like UFOs! It's fairly easy to fly in the dark too!

CSDH worked great last time. Also, a couple of us will be there this Sunday 9/1 if anyone wants to join.
