CANCELLED - 2014 Congressional Cup Yacht Race Long Beach

The organizers of the Congressional Cup yacht race in Long Beach are looking for a UAV enthusiast to help them shoot GoPro footage on April 6 for the Heritage Regatta, and April 7-13 for the Congressional Cup regatta (day/times are flexible). The video will be used for email blasts to major media outlets and social media. This is a volunteer effort, but the photographer will get credit and outstanding coverage of his/her work, media access to press boat, LB Yacht Club and other associated events. Flying need not be over the ocean – shots of the racing and the crowd can be captured from the Belmont Pier. http://www.thecongressionalcup.com/

Here is a more detailed schedule for the various events.

Sunday April 6th:  The Heritage Regatta.  Come out to the Pier and Spectator Boats to watch winning skippers from the 1960s through the 1990s back in competition! Confirmed so far are Scott Allan (1967), Skip Allan (1968), Dick Deaver (1976 & 1978), Dennis Durgan (1979 & 1980), Scott Perry (1982), Dave Perry (1983 & 1984) and Terry Hutchinson (1992).

Monday April 7th and Tuesday April 8th:  2014 Congressional Cup STAGE ONE. Long Beach Yacht Club Representative Skippers Scott Dickson and Dustin Durant take on six others in a two-day, two-round-robin competition in which the winner is champion of the Ficker Cup and the top four finishers move on to the next stage.

Wednesday April 9th/Thursday April 10th:  2014 Congressional Cup STAGE TWO. The top four from Stage One face recent Crimson Blazers Simone Ferrarese, Francesco Bruni, Johnie Berntsson, and Mathieu Richard.

Thursday April 10th:  Junior Congressional Cup, Youth Autograph Session and “Meet the Sailors” poolside cocktail party.

There is free grandstand seating and a running commentary at the pier provided by an experienced Congressional Cup skipper, Steve Steiner.

Food and restrooms are available at the pier.

On Thursday and Friday, immediately following each day’s racing, there will be a mini-press conference on the pier with select skippers.

Friday April 11th/Saturday April 12th/Sunday April 13th: 2014 Congressional Cup STAGE THREE.  The top six  from Stage Two are brought up against the top-ranked sailors of the world

Sunday, after racing, there will be a victory parade on the water from Veteran’s Memorial Pier to LBYC.

This is a great opportunity for the LA/OC DUG to do some community service and show the public that drones are not a bad thing.

If interested, please RSVP and Mike Rivard will send you the contact information.  Perhaps we can put a team together so that no one individual will have to be there every day unless they want to be.

I can't do Sunday, but may be able to hit up the other days. Let me know if this is still on.

I'm sorry I haven't been able to give you an update on this event but the LBYC folks have still not gotten back to me on the insurance situation. I know some of you don't feel that insurance is required but we must be covered for liability. Some guys are willing to fly their gear over the water with no problem; others don't want to take that risk on their own dime. Please don't hold the weekend open at this point. I'm still hoping that we can get a practice day and clearer picture of what is expected of us. I'll hope to have some solid answers in the next couple of days. Thanks for your patience.

The other thing, getting late and no plans, no practice etc, am I correct in guessing the club is taking this as a freebie, and not really taking preparations for aerial very seriously.?

i also mentioned the insurance. my bird cost 3K to replace and there is no way the boss lady is gonna approve another 3K to replace my gear. i have never crashed my bird and dont plan on doing that during this event but if it does happen, this hobby will end for me!

My craft is still down for some final configuration on the new pitch control unit - won't be able to make the race - anxious to see the videos. Good luck out there!

I think the LBYC is taking this seriously, it just wasn't thought out on their part and getting them to think about it has been a challenge. Stay tuned.

Hi all... Any new news on this event? I can't hold the weekend open much longer and need to know if we are doing it or not.

Waiting to hear back from the LBYC on insurance coverage in case someone has their rig go in the drink. They are also supposed to get back to me about a practice date. I'll post as soon as I know something.

I would love to do this but without insurance coverage, i will most likely opt out.

I am personally surprised that insurance for covering us even became a topic. It would be nice, but not expected. Perhaps I don't have quite the money tied up in my Hexacopter (with Gopro 3+ and gimbal) as Franco Chung, but I've been over the water a lot knowing that if the copter goes down, that's it. Here's a video filming surfers last week or so, BTW. https://www.youtube.co...

    Hey Guys,
Couldn't we use planes as well?? I think we could get some good shots with one. And, being foam, it'll float..

A team effort would be great.
I did a little checking, seems starting is maybe[masked]m from the pier, with center of the racing area maybe 750m out.
to improve the situation it would be awesome to request a UAV pram instead of shuffling for elbow room on the press boat, preferably something with a flat area for take-off operations. Im sure landings can be handles by spotter-catching.
Flying this FPV overwater seems OK, need a spotter to make make sure we don't suddenly have a collision with a mast. Sailboats typically travel 8-12knots, roughly 14mph (?) meaning this is quite comfortable speed for us to do some follow shots.. but any substantial wind could make the actual flying speed significantly higher.
Still, single operator stabilized camera should get some awesome shots.

Really final thought. maybe have a chance to go fly the dress rehearsal to get a feeling for it all and work out kinks with follow pilots and UAV boat operator.

I agree Bo, a drone specific boat with a sizeable landing area is necessary. Also, the dress rehearsal would be easy. We can set it up with the LBYC so we can work out some important logistics.

Sure. I've flown m DJI Vision out there before.
