April 20 - Expedition into the Desert and Big Rock Mountains (Whole day - edible and aromatic plants & flowers)
This is a full day trip.
We will meet at 9 AM at a local 711 store (see address below), you can purchase a forest pass there ($5.00 I think). I'll provide everybody with a map on our itinerary and where we plan to stop here and there so people can catch up if necessary.
The goal is to explore the useful, edible and aromatic plants in the desert and the forest. We should find interesting new plants such as California Junipers, soap plants, mormon tea, manzanita (berries), chia, joshua trees and much, much more! The desert should be in full bloom so the trip will probably be spectacular.
We will probably see so many wild flowers, it would be a good thing if you research online the wild flowers of Southern California or even better, if you have a book about it bring it with you. I still have so much to learn about wild flowers, I may not be able to identify many of them.
Make sure your tank is full before we start the trip. In case you get lost we'll have specific meeting/location and time so you can catch up.
Bring water and food/snacks - the desert can be very windy so bring appropriate clothing.
This trip will be canceled if it is a rainy day.
Time: Start around 9 A.M. to sunset probably. You can always leave early if you want.
Meeting Location: Local 711 - 11348 Sunburst St, Sylmar, CA, US
Look for a red jeep wrangler or Gray Nissan XTerra
