State of Wonder by Ann Patchett

In a narrative replete with poison arrows, devouring snakes, scientific miracles, and spiritual transformations, State of Wonder presents a world of stunning surprise and danger, rich in emotional resonance and moral complexity.

As Dr. Marina Singh embarks upon an uncertain odyssey into the insect-infested Amazon, she will be forced to surrender herself to the lush but forbidding world that awaits within the jungle. Charged with finding her former mentor Dr. Annick Swenson, a researcher who has disappeared while working on a valuable new drug, she will have to confront her own memories of tragedy and sacrifice as she journeys into the unforgiving heart of darkness. Stirring and luminous, State of Wonder is a world unto itself, where unlikely beauty stands beside unimaginable loss beneath the rain forest's jeweled canopy.

I really enjoyed Patchett's writing. I love her subtlety. State of Wonder is quite adventurous, but also sustains a good discussion on several themes--my favorite of which is our innate desire both to be parented and to parent.

I was disappointed to miss last night, I got off of work late. I did enjoy the book though I would have liked to have seen a different ending.

I'm sorry, I won't be able to meet with you all to discuss this book. I have to work this week. It was a good read, though. Ending was too far-fetched for me, but otherwise, good.

Really admire her work. Haven't read this yet but several others. Have also been to her bookstore in Nashville. Sorry I will not be able to get to this meeting.

It looks like we will have to get in individual copies of the book at the branch. I have two copies available tonight, and I have ordered more in. There are also plenty of copies in the library system- so if you are from another part of town and don't want to drive all the way out here, I would recommend checking at other branches.
