Scotch Broom Removal at Blackie Spit (Mar 16 2014)

The Lower Mainland Green Team joined force with the Friends of Semiahmoo Bay to remove Scotch Broom and pick up litter at Blackie Spit Park in Surrey!

  • 28 volunteers contributed 58 hours
  • Volunteers came from Burnaby, Surrey, Maple Ridge, White Rock, and Richmond
  • 6 volunteers had never been to Blackie Spit
  • 15 volunteers had never removed Scotch Broom before
  • 13 volunteers had never participated in a shoreline cleanup before
  • We removed 1000 pounds of Scotch Broom (wow!!) and 70 pounds of litter from the shoreline
  • One group found a geocache with a coin in it during the shoreline cleanup
  • An eagle stopped by to watch the Scotch Broom removal and there were numerous sightings of other birds during the event
  • It was strong group of volunteers of all ages who braved the wind and rain and did a fantastic job!
