Meet Up to discuss 2nd book in Winter Series

  • January 29, 2014 · 6:30 PM

Hello Everyone,

The second book in our Winter Series is The Dinner by Herman Koch. Read below for a brief summary about The Dinner.

"A European Gone Girl." --The Wall Street Journal

An internationally bestselling phenomenon: the darkly suspenseful, highly controversial tale of two families struggling to make the hardest decision of their lives -- all over the course of one meal.

It's a summer's evening in Amsterdam, and two couples meet at a fashionable restaurant for dinner. Between mouthfuls of food and over the polite scrapings of cutlery, the conversation remains a gentle hum of polite discourse -- the banality of work, the triviality of the holidays. But behind the empty words, terrible things need to be said, and with every forced smile and every new course, the knives are being sharpened.
Each couple has a fifteen-year-old son. The two boys are united by their accountability for a single horrific act; an act that has triggered a police investigation and shattered the comfortable, insulated worlds of their families. As the dinner reaches its culinary climax, the conversation finally touches on their children. As civility and friendship disintegrate, each couple show just how far they are prepared to go to protect those they love.
Tautly written, incredibly gripping, and told by an unforgettable narrator, The Dinner promises to be the topic of countless dinner party debates. Skewering everything from parenting values to pretentious menus to political convictions, this novel reveals the dark side of genteel society and asks what each of us would do in the face of unimaginable tragedy.

The novel is 304 pages so I scheduled the next Meet Up accordingly and with ample time to read the novel at an enjoyable pace. As always, I am open for suggestions for other time frames so please let me know

Happy Reading!

Andrea, I do presentations also, so I get what you're saying :) I just meant that it has been great to hear everyone's voice during the last sessions I've attended. So I would LOVE a re-do. If there's another date, let me know. I am out of town Feb 5-7 and Thursdays are usually already booked for me.
In any case, I thank you for selecting the book. I would have never picked this up on my own! In fact I have enjoyed everything I've read as part of this group!

Andrea - I am sick and will not be able to make it today!! Bummer because I had RSVPd +1 and was hoping to bring my Mom as well - she loves reading and discussing books and is a treasure trove of information. Sorry to have to miss it...Have fun and miss me please!

I hope you feel better :( don't despair, if enough people can't make it and would still like to meet up to discuss the book, I don't mind having a second Meet Up. Actually, I never usually let the amount of people be a factor, and will meet regardless of the size of the group.

Folks, I know some of you can't make it tonight because of various reasons. Postponing last weeks Meet Up was unavoidable, and I promised to those who can't attend the Meet Up this week to hold a second Meet Up. I don't want to just schedule a second Meet Up and the same thing happens-the majority can't attend because of various reasons. Thus, if you folks are still interested in a second Meet Up for "The Dinner", then please forward me some dates that work for you, either thru posts, emailing, or both. Thx! See some of you folks tonight!

Thank you both for the very positive comments. Ironiclly, the mgr from Saxbys called me & we talkd about the number of people as well. So I went there last week & the mgr & I did a test run w/a set up of 23 people & 23 chairs, all nicely spaced, not cramped, & it fit just like a glove. As for a real dialogue, my previous experience was in Training. I have given lectures to people of rooms filled with 500 people so I am not worried about how the dialogue will go, at all! I don't think I have disappointed anyone yet, and I hope to not disappoint any in the future. Yes, there may not be 20 people that show up, but I always try to be positive, and hope there will be 23 or whatever amount. The dialogue will never change to disappoint because know matter the years of experience or training that I have in giving lectures all over the world to thousands of people, it's the passion, joy, fun, laughter, and good old fashion good bumps I get when we talk about the books. I the book going each month.

I changed my RSVP. I finished the book a month ago and have been itching to discuss it. But I think 20+ people is too many for that space and a real dialogue.

I think it's unlikely that 20 people will actually show up.

Does anyone else want to venture out per Linda's request?

Folks, I understand your disappointment, but Saxbys has been cancelled and many roads are still a mess for many people. Also, I wouldn't feel good about myself if I changed my plan of action with such short notice and with the roads still being so risky. I would feel horrible if someone got hurt on the way to a Meet Up because they were rushing to get there through what's left of the messy roads. Some roads are still not plowed and I need to be considerate of every member. I'm sorry for the inconvenience. I am very willing to have two, three, four, as many Meet Ups as you want, just on any other dates than tonight because then I wouldn't be going back on my words and I don't do that. I hope you can understand and appreciate that. If you read some of the other posts on our home page you will see that some folks were concerned about getting to the Meet Up on time because of the affects of the storm. My rule if thumb is that if I receive 3 or more posts or emails then I postpone or cancel a Meet Up. There were

If next week doesn't work then we can figure out a better date that works for everyone.

The date change is disappointing. I enjoyed the book and was looking forward to meeting the group. However I have plans for next week.

Is it possible for us to meet tonight as well? Then those that can't make it next week can meet this week?

I'm sorry it was changed but understand if worked best for everyone else. I have a prior commitment for next wednesday. See you in April.

I have been following the local weather all day and they say the storm will settle down some time in the middle of the night. Then comes either your plow guy and/ or whoever shovels you out. Depending on where you live, I have learned in the short amount of years living on the Main Line, also depends on how quickly or not quickly your street will get plowed. Thus, my question to you folks is, would you like to postpone the Meet Up until next Wednesday? Same place, same time, god willing, no snow storms! Please let me know as soon as possible so I can call Saxbys to cancel for tomorrow. Thx

I'm a little unsure about getting there too, after my 3 hour drive home from work this afternoon (from north Philly to Drexel Hill). I guess it should be fine by tomorrow night!

I read this book a couple of months ago. Loved it! Can't wait to talk about it. Assuming I can drive, I'm going to try to make it to Saxby's.
