S1: Book Review Group - September meeting

After the success of the last meeting, I have scheduled our next meeting for Thursday 12 September.  The books chosen for review are:

Science Fiction           Enders Game by Orson Scott Card
Fantasy                     Myrren's Gift by Fiona McIntosh (AU)
Urban Fantasy           Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews

I have also set up a group on good reads as requested.  The details are:

http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/109091-melbourne-sci--fi-fantasy-meet-up-book-review-group

Please feel free to join this group.

The meeting will be held in the back room again, so we can enjoy a good debate about the books, without disturbing the other patrons of the pub.

For those attending for the first time, it would be fantastic if you can try to read at least one of the 3 books listed here, so you can join in the conversation.  If everyone can also think of some suggestions for future books, that would be fantastic.  If you actually have the book that you would like to suggest, bring it along so we can read the blurb etc.

I hope you to see you there!

    Hi all

The books selected by the group for our next meeting on Thursday 14 November 2013 are:

Science Fiction: Terry Pratchett & Stephen Baxter - The Long Earth
Fantasy: Brandon Sanderson - Mistborn: The Final Empire (book 1)
Urban Fantasy: Lauren Beukes - Zoo City

Of the books selected for September 2013, the following things were stated:

Science Fiction: Orson Scott Card - Ender's Game, score: 4 out of 5. The group said that if you like Ender's Game, you might like Heinlein or L.E. Modessit

Fantasy: Fiona McIntosh - Myrren's Gift, score 3.5 out of 5. If you like this, you might like books by Jennifer Fallon, George R R Martin, Guy Gavariel Kay

Urban Fantasy: Ilona Andrews - Magic Bites, score 3.5 out of 5, although book 2 is better. If you like this book, you might other authors like Patricia Briggs, Jim Butcher and Kim Harrison

    Hope to see you there!

Thanks Julianne, I'll start finding the next set of books. And thanks for giving me other authors to follow up on, I'm just about to finish the last Jim Butcher book and will be needing some more authors to fill the gap. Looking forward to getting to the next book group meetup. Cheers Tess

I was looking forward to going, but had to have a wisdom tooth out this morning, so won't be able to make it.

I'm going overseas soon for a couple of months, so unfortunately will probably miss the next meeting as well.

Hi Aidan, sorry to read about your wisdom tooth. Hope you're ok. I'll post the books here, and on the good reads site. Speak soon. J

Am really keen to try the new Neil Gaiman when it hits bookshops here.....if it hasn't already. The Ocean at the End of the Lane. Not sure which category it fits into.

    • Michael R.

The Ocean at the End of the Lane is available in bookshops now; an excellent read and probably one of those novels that has fantasy elements (rather than a straight out fantasy novel)

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
