S1: Book Review Group - March 2014

Hi all

The books chosen for 13 March are:

Sci-Fi: Ringworld by Larry Niven
Fantasy: The Sheepfarmer's Daughter (book 1 of The Deed of Paksanarian) by Elizabeth Moon
Urban Fantasy: The Ocean at the End of The Lane by Neil Gaiman

Organiser's comment: By default, it is highly recommended that all members read Storm Front (book 1 of The Dresden Files) by Jim Butcher... As it is AWESOME and many people in the Sci-Fi meet up group have read his books! I could be a bit biased though!!!!! ;-). It is not one of the books chosen for March.  I think I've already converted many people to Dresden prior to this group commencing, thus the comment!

If you would like to join us on our good reads group, where you can put future book suggestions, and read some information about our upcoming books, please visit us at: http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/109091-melbourne-sci--fi-fantasy-meet-up-book-review-group

I have also started putting a couple of discussion groups on the good reads group.  At the moment there is a discussion group on Australian Authors and one on Stand Alone Fantasy novels.  Feel free to add your comments to these discussions.

The group starts at 7pm.  We normally order dinner at this time, and they deliver it part way through the meeting.  Ordering food is not compulsory, however, if you wish to order some dinner, meals will normally cost between $16 - $30.

I have also booked the back room for the remainder of the year for our meet ups.  Please pencil these dates in your diary.  I won't actually set up the next meet up until the books have been chosen.

Great group and good discussions. Though I feel I might not be all that up to date on the sci-fi literature! Thanks for making me feel welcome.

Would someone maybe give me his or her mobile number in case I don't find you later? My sense of orientation is not too good :D Might be a tiny bit late as well as my train arrives at 6:52pm and I have a bit to walk after that. But I am definitely coming :)

I'm sorry I won't make it on Thursday. My former boss & mentor is having her retirement dinner on Thursday night. So after practically begging to have Ocean at the End of the Lane in March I won't be there to discuss it :(

My apologies, but what with stocktake, my work too, is crazy at the moment, so I'm unable to attend. Sorry guys. Cheers Tess

Ringworld is one of my all time favourites!

I think I won't make it in March :( The only book that sounds interesting to me is "The Ocean at the End of the Lane" and it is way too expensive at the moment.. The cheaper version will only come out in April.

But If I can find a cheaper version I will hopefully be able to come this time :)

Dymocks were selling it as part of a but 2 get 1 free offer, but it's also available through the library network, if you wanted to join your local library to order it in. Hope you can secure a copy, so you can join us!
