Ultimate Frisbee is super easy and super fun so don't worry if you've never played before!
UPDATE: we've been playing a lot recently, and as a result the turf has become quite damaged. We will for the time being be playing adjacent to the tennis courts, just to the east of where we usually play.
Follow this link or just look to the west and you'll see us playing!
We've had great levels of participation recently, both from seasoned Frisbee throwers and those who have never played and are keen to get out there and have a go!
For our regulars: You know the drill - see you at 10ish and don't forget to RSVP.
For newcomers: You may only see a few people have RSVP'd below, but don't be fooled - our numbers are typically 20-40.
Here are some things you should know:
Where: At Princes Park, Carlton. See map below.
What about the weather: Ignore the weather. Unless it is actually torrential, we'll play. If you turn up and no-one is around (and it's torrential) then everyone has probably gone to Bridie O'Reilly's (on the corner of Sydney Rd and Brunswick Rd http://brunswickrd.bridieoreillys.com.au/home/location )
Who will be there: People typically turn up from 10am. Sometimes people are delayed. If you are on time and no-one is there at 10, hang around for at least 15 minutes while people struggle to get out of bed.
What should I do first: There may not appear to be anyone in charge. This is a relaxed group - just say "Hi, I'm new." to the first person you see and go with it from there.
What next?: If you hear someone call for "Throwing Practice", or you turn up a bit late and it appears that people are involved in throwing practice, then join in. This group is for you.
But I don't know how to throw a frisbee: That's ok, that's what throwing practice is for.
I don't know the rules or how to play the game: When it comes time for a game, team groups are thrown together with a mix of experienced and new players. Everyone will help you. You don't need to know the rules and you will pick them up as you go. If something doesn't make sense (which is guaranteed), feel free to ask someone on your team what happened.
We don't seem to be strictly following the rules of Ultimate, or keeping score: Correct. Saturday mornings we play for fun and give a lot of leeway to the rules, especially to new players. Usually after 30 mins or so, we'll play the first to 3 points. Unless your side gets to 3 points before our side. Then we might play to 5 points.
Do I need to bring a Frisbee: No.
What should I wear: Summer - shorts and t-shirt. Winter - shorts and t-shirt and leggings and tracksuit pants and compression garments and beanie and jacket and it's so mind-numbingly cold but wait until you start running around and you will quickly realise you shouldn't have worn jeans. Unfortunately cleats cannot be worn. They cause a lot of damage to the ground that we cant pay for! If it's slippy don't worry! you wont be the only one slipping!
What happens on the morning: 10:00 am - Frisbee throwing training! Frisbee coach Craig will take us through some techniques and drills. 10:30ish - Everyone will be called together and roughly equal sides of dark shirts and light shirts will be grouped together to form teams. This is why you should bring both a dark shirt AND a light shirt. Ideally, REALLY dark and REALLY light. Pink and Yellow are neither light nor dark colours. 10:[masked]ish Game 1. [masked] Drink break. [masked]:20 Game 2. 12:20ish off to the Pub for beers and eats.
What to Bring: Your bad self Maybe a friend Water / Drink / Snack A Dark (preferably Black or Dark Navy) AND a Light (preferably White) coloured shirt Some sunscreen if it's Summer. Lastly, this is a Community group, so it is driven by you. If you have any ideas let us all know!! And if anyone has any questions, put 'em through!
