The Bridges of Melbourne

  • March 16, 2014 · 5:00 PM
  • Princes Bridge Flinders Street Station end

Melbourne has a number of beautiful bridges crossing the Yarra River. We're going to try to capture them at their finest, during golden hour.

We're meeting at the northern side of Princes Bridge, which is the St Kilda Road bridge at Flinders Street Station. The sun will be coming from the downstream/Crown Casino direction, so the eastern side of the bridge will be basked in beautiful afternoon light. There's good shooting down at water level on both sides of the river, and also from on top of the bridge towards the MCG.

We'll head along in front of Southgate and cross the river again on the Southgate Footbridge. The railings of the bridge are adorned with padlocks signifying commitment, which make for some interesting motifs. They might well be a perfect excuse to learn about focus stacking in your post production.

We cross the river again almost immediately along the Sandridge Bridge, which is an old rail bridge. Today it has a number of large metal sculptures.

We'll keep walking along Southbank, past the casino and down to the Polly Woodside sailing ship. The seafarers bridge is an interesting one there, with its large metal spans. The ship might also be worth a few shots.

Our final bridge will be the much photographed Webb Bridge, just west of Wurunjeri Way. By this time we should be well and truly in blue hour, which suits Webb Bridge just fine.

If the mood takes us we can head up to a car park roof in Siddeley Street, just next to the World Trade Centre, and take some elevated shots. Maybe some light trails from the road below. Another options is to try to capture the light reflections in the Yarra as we head back up towards Southgate. Maybe we can catch the flame towers at Crown Casino. Finish off with a quick drink somewhere around Southgate. It's a school night after all.

Beth has already indicated that she is snowed under this month and will not be able to lead us on this event. So look out for me instead. I'll keep the event page updated during the course of the afternoon/evening of our location, so download the app and know where we are! Looking forward to seeing lots of you there.

Didn't think I was going to be able to come along so I didn't put my name down for it. I did manage to drop in for an hour & a bit in the end. Only sorry I wasn't able to ""meet up" with the others though I did bump into Beth on the way out. Looks like everybody had a great time! Keep snapping!

Hi Guys. I haven't got a camera yet. Just wanted some advice on a good mirrorless camera - up to $1000. PS. Would I be taken seriously with a mirrorless camera in this group?!? ;-)

    March 9, 2014

    • Tobi F.

The X-E2 has the same IQ but a faster AF system on the sensor.. have alook at this http://nathanelson.co...

      1 · March 14, 2014

No one will laugh at your mirrorless system with those kind of images :-)

I know nuts about photography but I can spot a good photo and I give excellent comments. I want to watch the sun go down on those bridges and may be try out my smartphone camera to fill up my istagram!

my nikon is not weather proof ... :( therefore i'll just be at the pub ... ;) - should have bought that pentax :) :) :)

    March 12, 2014

    • Peter H.

Stop worrying about the weather Marlene. I had my Nikon out in the rain in Iceland with no dramas. Just throw a teatowel over it and it will be just fine. Think of the great images you can get when things are wet.

I am also cancelling. A few reasons unfortunately I'm not mentally ready to meet a whole bunch of strangers die to my extreme depression and anxiety.

Secondly I haven't picked up my camera in over a year meaning my photography will be seriously super bad and it being that bad won't help point 1.

    Sorry everyone

    March 8, 2014

    • Marree A.

Jennifer I can understand your anxiety. I hope we can meet and you can enjoy the evening. Let us know what would make it easier for you.

      March 9, 2014

    • Tobi F.

We are a very loose association of people you can mingle as much as you want or not at all and just follow the crowd of smiling photographers ! well some of us smile ;-) others scowl at the screen of their DSLR and many do both ! ;-)

      1 · March 14, 2014

hmmm peter - not sure I want my Nikon - as Nils puts it "pissed on"

    March 12, 2014

    • Peter H.

Stop worrying - bring along a teatowel and all will be well.

Pissing contest Nils ... hmmm? :)

    1 · March 8, 2014

    • Peter H.

Not my lens Nils. It happened to a photo group I know who were in Iceland for the last week. No idea how they managed that feat but they were chasing the waves photographing icebergs. Also 2 Canon cameras apparently went for a shower.

      March 11, 2014

    • Marlene

very funny nils ... i'm so lmao ... so gonna hit you when i see you !!!

    March 5, 2014

    • Nils V.

I know Andrew. And if I didn't have something on in the morning that I have to go to, I'd be going to the GP that day too. Instead I'm going on the Saturday.

Regret have to cancel. Just been invited to a friends 70th on that day. Very special occasion obviously.

    March 6, 2014

Sorry to hear that Rob. Don't worry, the bridges will always be there (unlike the sunflowers).
