Steam trains and autumn leaves at Emerald Lake

Autumn is a beautiful time in the Dandenongs, with many locations graced with colourful autumn leaves.

This event will be in two locations. Our prelude is to photograph the iconic Puffing Billy steam train as it crosses the trestle bridge over the Belgrave-Gembrook Road (Google maps reference is here. Puffing Billy is scheduled to depart the nearby Belgrave Station at 11.10 am and will be at the bridge within minutes, so plan to be there by 10.45 am for the introduction and to have time to pick your vantage point.

Once the train has passed we'll be heading on to Emerald Lake, with the meeting point being the Emerald Lake Model Railway (Google maps reference is here).  That should be around 11.45 am or so, depending on how long the Puffing Billy shoot takes.

Emerald Lake Park boasts beautiful autumn leaves, a scenic lake, walking tracks and a model railway. The model railway boasts 2000 metres of track, making it the largest in the southern hemisphere ($6 admission).

Please be aware that parking at Emerald Lake is by ticket. So make sure that you have some coins handy to buy a ticket. There is a café at the lake for lunch/coffee.

The day was picture perfect; absolutely wonderful weather for this time of the year. Below is a video of those people (from The Melbourne Walk and Shoot Group) who were at the Trestle bridge:

It was a nice experience to me. I met someone (sorry I forgot his name), did take some excellent photos of the trees and bridge shadow on the lake with 10 stop big stopper ND filter and long exposure. I would like to know the brand of the filter which has magnetic attachment, so no need to screw the filter on lens thread. This helps the lens to stick with focus. Please let me know.

    May 12, 2014

    • Dave B.

have responded to Niaz directly.. but for the benefit of anyone else who was interested; Hey Niaz, the filter is a Heliopan ND3.0 (which is a 10-stop). The magnetic filter holder is Xume (www.xume.com).

The square filters are much better, as you can get variable/partial ones and slide them in just as far as needed (to darken just the sky for example).. and easier to stack, so being able to have ND plus polarizer at the same time. This is difficult to do with the screw-on filters, especially when we're talking wide angle lense such as mine that takes 82mm filter - the filters in that size are expensive, and the more you add, the more vignetting.

At some point I'd like to get a Lee Big Stopper and filter kit, but they're really expensive.. so this does me for now!

      cheers
      Dave

I was told this morning (from my man in the mountains) that it is still very green up there ... not a lot of autumn colour yet!

    May 7, 2014

    • Nils V.

It's tricky scheduling something like this weeks in advance. Go too early and they're still green. Go too late and ... need I say "sunflowers"?

Hi all. I'm new to meetup, and this is likely to be my second meetup, first one being on Saturday. Hopefully I'll be able to find my way to where I need to be. (I'm terrible with directions, but GPS is my saviour)

    2 · May 7, 2014

It should be a fun one Wilson. And for autumn leaves even mist or fog would be good, so very weather flexible.

My step-dad (who works as a volunteer at Puffing Billy railway) wants to pass on information that the train departs Puffing Billy Station at 10:30 am, and only takes 5 minutes to get to the trestle bridge.
If everyone assembles there at 10:45, you will miss the Puffing Billy train passing overhead on the iconic bridge.
A much safer bet is to get there at no later than 10:30, to give time to gain good vantage points and set up equipment/tripods etc.

    Fabian

    1 · May 6, 2014

    • Nils V.

Thanks Fabian. We are actually aiming for the 11.10am departure, not the 10.30am one.

      1 · May 6, 2014

    • Fabian

It is obvious that i have made an error; not reading the description carefully enough.

      1 · May 6, 2014

  • Dalibor

What equipment are people bringing? :) I think I will bring a tripod, canon 5Dmk3 with 24-70mm, and a 10-20mm lens. I think the 10-20 would give some nice effects. Anyone need a portrait photo - I can bring the[masked]mm lens as well. look forward to seeing you all!

    May 6, 2014

    • Nils V.

Should be ideal Dalibor. The[masked]mm maybe for the train, depending on your vantage point. 10-20 (on FF?) Might be interesting camping yourself under a tree with leaves all around. Probably 10-20mm, 17-70mm for me on crop sensor, maybe[masked]mm for the train. And tripod.

    maybe the sunday after?

I was up at Emerald Lake on Sunday to have a look around. Agree that it was still quite green. But it's another 2 weeks away and all that they need is a couple of cold nights.

Though i have mentioned that i am free between the 16th and the 21st of May, my next week-off is between the 2nd and the 7th of May, should the date of May 11th be changed,

This event is exactly the kind of Meetup that i wish to attend but unfortunately the date of May 11 cuts into my working week-on, so i cannot attend.

I will be free again between the 16th and the 21st of May.
