Rise of the Runelords Pathfinder Campaign

I am looking to GM a session at Valhalla's Gate once a week. I have some experience GMing sessions and have a few specific rules. There will be 3 banned classes, 4 if you count antipaladins. Other than that, just about anything goes. Basic rule is - If I own the rulebook, the rules are usable. For reference I own all non-universe-specific main rulebooks.

    Any confirmation from Valhalla's Gate?

    January 19, 2013

    • Jerrod

I will try to make it after my appointment but I'm not sure when that will end. I might miss the first session. If it looks like I'll miss I will send you my sheet so everyone knows what I'm bringing to the table.

Anyone working on a cleric or Oracle? If not I'll switch to that. I like having a healer. :-)

Sweet! What level are we starting with?

Everyone starts at level one with average (median) gold for their class.

For the record, you guys all rock. Thank you for investing the time and effort to make this easier for me. Jim and Jerrod have both gone way beyond the call of duty and have sent me multiple backstories and character profiles. Cheers guys. I just want to make sure that everyone has their character phobia(s) and passion picked out. I have found that those basic elements really help character development at low levels. And remember, I give in-game rewards for good roleplaying!

A special thanks goes out to dean for making the discussion board and polls. Huge help.

    • Jim

Thanks for the praise, man. And for the record, I in my turn thank you for your time, effort, and energy in offering to run and in keeping up with us. (Oh, and I changed my mind on the monk idea I said I'd send you because it's just begging for The Prisoner Dilemma to come up.)

Okay based on the poll and posts Thursday at 5:30 would be a good time. That is what I will ask for then. Thanks dean.

    January 17, 2013

    • Jerrod

Before I forget, if you are planning on starting next week I can't do Thursday. Any other week that would be a fine day for me, just not next week.

Is this open to some one new to Pathfinder. I played D&D many years ago v3 but the Pathfinder system seems like the hyberdized D&D we played in Collegee.

Yes new players are fine. The rules are all available online if you need them.

And PF IS just an expanded and improved version of 3.5. Some of the rules are slightly different, but not by much.

    That poll is sweet.

Status update. Valhalla gate hasn't gotten back to me via email yet so I will talk to them in person on Saturday. Should be able to get a date for this at that time. My schedule works best with Wednesday or Thursday. Which would be better for you guys?

    January 17, 2013

    • Jerrod

I can make either day, it depends on the time you want to start. I get off work at 4:30 so I could, in theory get there by 5.

I have a dwarf fighter that I want to play. I don't know if anyone else is at the character phase yet but I thought I would get the party started.

I have a half-elven summoner put together that I like quite a lot. I have an oracle on standby in case we don't need a summoner (but why wouldn't we need hordes of immortal monsters to throw at bad guys?); and Daniel, FYI, I dropped that rogue idea I pitched you on the grounds that it would be irresponsible to play a character who has to keep secrets in a group that don't know or have any reason to trust me as a player. That way lies hard feelings. I'll hit you up with my monk alternate character pitch later today.

I've come up with some wacky ideas for pretty much any role. My current favorite is an Inquisitor/Rogue thug... but I can switch if needed.

Does the half-elf racial characteristic Elven Blood mean half-elves qualify for elven and human racial traits?

    January 16, 2013

    • A former member
      A former member

No it doesn't. Half-elves have their own racial traits and may not take either human or elf specific traits. Sorry

      January 16, 2013

    • Jim

No big deal: I was just curious how far that elven blood thing extends. Thanks for the answer.

Two more quick questions: When you say you're using traits, do you mean you're giving two free traits to each character? And if we're using Pathfinder Society rules, does that mean item creation feats are off the table?

    January 14, 2013

    • A former member
      A former member

Item creation is fine. Just point build system from society everything else is standard. Yes two free traits.

      January 14, 2013

  • Jerrod

Just let me know the date and time and I will be there. Are you using traits and hero points?

while I am allowing just about every race in the advanced race guide, goblins are incondusive to the campaign. I have to say no on that one.

      January 14, 2013

    • Jerrod

No problem. Hard to find a place for goblins in many campaigns that aren't made specifically for goblins characters.

Before anyone asks - evil pcs can be played. They have the following restriction. An evil character may not be chaotic. They may not act against the rest of the party. They must have a backstory explaining why I should permit them to run with a (primarily good) party. A sufficiently good backstory can unlock the antipaladin class, but don't count on it.
I do award good roleplaying. The less out of character knowledge (metagaming) that takes place, the better the rewards. These include, but are not limited to, extra team feats, sidequests, and magic items. As such, I would appreciate if each character had at least 1 (no more than 2) phobia and 1 (only) aspect of life they felt extremely strongly about. A good example would be a magic user who is an incredible pedant and considers application of brute force to be beneath him, causing him to inject low-key mocking into routine fights.

Valhalla's Gate has a reservable RPG room that you should think about using. I would like to play but it depends on the day and the time.

Depending on the date, I'm interested. How do you feel about summoners (the base class from the Advanced Player's Guide, not the specialist wizard)? Would you like everyone to have a character ready to go, or generate them at the table?

    January 13, 2013

    • Jim

Thanks, I'll do what I can. Are you okay with computers at your table? I don't own hard copies of the books, just .pdfs.

Fine. I will have a hard copy of each book with me to double check rules but you are welcome to use whatever you have.
