The 25th annual John Dick Memorial 50 kilometer run will be held on Saturday, February 2nd, 2013. The start and finish are located at the D.J. Mackie Group picnic area on Hwy ZZ in the Southern Kettle Moraine unit. This event is a primitive winter trail run; participants should be experienced and accustomed to winter trail running, properly dressed and prepared (I also recommend microspikes like these or installing screws in your shoes in case there is ice like last year.)

The course is five 10K loops, so you can run as many loops as you want! And for only $10 (pre-registered) or $15 (day of race), it's a great and cheap mid-winter training run.

More details can be found here.

Also, here's the Striders map and directions and a Google map.

If you want to carpool, meet at the State Fair Park and Ride at 6am and we'll figure how many cars to take based on what distance everyone is running.

We're meeting at the State Fair Park and Ride at 6:00 am tomorrow morning. Could I get a quick 'yes' or 'no' from people if you are planning on carpooling? Then we'll know who we should be expecting. And since we can't wait around very long, you get the standard 5-minute grace period. :)

Lets take à Group pic before the race today. It might be hard after the race as people will go for different distances and will finish at different times.

A couple more things you may want to bring:

-A drop bag to put extra clothes, shoes, etc. at the manned aid station. The cars are about a half mile off the course, so you won't be going back there until the finish. For clothes, I usually go with a spare pair of shoes and socks because wet feet are miserable.

-A hydration pack (or belt if that's your thing). Not totally necessary with the placement of the manned and unmanned aid stations, but nice to have if you own one. I carry a 70 oz. Nathan, but also have a 30 oz Camelbak and a handheld water bottle if someone wants to use either.

I recommend picking up a pair of microspikes to strap on to your existing running shoes. If there is ice like last year, you will be very happy you bought these (people were falling all over the place). I ran the whole race last year in them, so I can vouch. Here's a link to buy them: http://www.amazon.com/Micro-Spikes-Pocket-Traction-System/dp/B002NBN1LO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1358979395&sr=8-1&keywords=kahtoola+microspikes

Alternatively, you can "install" screws into your shoes ahead of time. Here is a video tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=us82woC7RMM

I don't recommend YakTrax, as those might provide a small level of traction but are not worth the cost in my opinion. Stick with something that is good on snow AND ice.

    Any other questions, just ask.

@Caroline: Good idea. Though if anyone wants, I have Amazon Prime free 2-day or $3.99 overnight shipping and can order them for you if you reimburse me.

@Jaime: That's true, but I remember a backlog of people trying to get that done last year at the last minute. It's a pretty good option if you have a pair of shoes that is near "end of life" that you can throw some screws in for one more big run.

Hey all, we should plan on carpooling. I don't actually know where this place is exactly, anyone know of a good meeting point? A park and ride? I can drive and take 3 extra people in my car.

I'm running the 50k, too, so I will!:) I think there are a few if us running the full distance. You can ride with me if you want.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
