Interested in using your culinary skills to help those in need? Or, don't have any culinary skills, but interested in learning some and helping others at the same time? Then, please consider joining our group! Our "Cooking For Good" Meetup group meets the first Sunday of every month to prepare and serve a hot meal to those in need. The group started in April 2012 and has prepared over 2,400 meals for the HBCAC shelter since then!
We meet at a member's home or a commercial kitchen at 1 pm and start to prepare a meal for homeless men staying at the Home Builders Care Assessment Center (an emergency homeless shelter operated by Montgomery County Coalition for the Homeless). This shelter houses about 75 men at a time during warm weather and around 200 men during the winter months. They have no cooking facilities in their building, so they rely on outside volunteers to cook meals in their homes and then bring them to the shelter. We will take the prepared food to the shelter before 5:30.
Everyone is welcome...singles, couples, all ages! Also, for all you parents out there, you are warmly welcome to bring children (age 7+) to help cook, unless we're scheduled to cook in a commercial kitchen. Please email host if children under age 16 are joining you.
SSL Credits! Montgomery County public schools students who volunteer at MoCoCo can earn SSL credits! Our cooking events can qualify for 3-5 SSL hours, as we cook for 75+ people. A pdf file under the 'Discussions' tab has more information and instructions on obtaining SSL Credits.
There's no fee to join or attend social events. When you RSVP for a cooking event, you'll be asked to pay a fee to help purchase ingredients for the meal we're preparing and to cover any pantry/meetup costs. Signing up for a cooking event means you are committing to the event. If you cannot come to an event you registered for, please let the event organizer know as soon as possible.
Each month the hands of many make what we do possible. If you're available to chip in a little extra time to help with shopping for ingredients, hosting, delivering the prepared meal, etc., drop us a line or let one of the organizers know. And thank you.
